Book Reviews of The Unlikely SpyBook Review: Order Review from pbshopus (The Mark of the Assassin and The Unlikely Spy Summary: 4 Stars
I was trying to leave feedback on order from this seller, could not find a link. Anyway the books I ordered arrived in perfect condition. Maybe they shouldn't have wrapped rubber bands around the two books. The reason I only gave them 4 stars is because I had to wait longer for purchase that I have ever had to wait before when purchasing through Amazon.com. I did get an email from the company stating that my order had been misdirected. I understand this can happen especially with the bad winter storms in the Eastern United States. I sent an email requesting a wild guess as to when my purchase would be shipped, did not get a reply from shipper. I send a second email requesting the same information, this time I received an answer. Reading the feedbacks this seller has received in the past, I noticed there were quite a few for merchandise misdirect and slow or no reply to emails. I would suggest to the company/seller that they hire someone with knowledge of shipping and tracking to preclude this from happening again and causing the loss of customers and bad reviews. I think I will probably buy from them again, but if it happens again, they are of my purchase list and on the toilet paper list. I purchased two paperbacks from: The Mark of the Assassin and The Unlikely Spy, both by Daniel Silva, great mystery writer.
Book Review: Outstanding! Summary: 5 Stars
This, the first of Daniel Silva's novels, and certainly one of his best, is an outstanding read. I couldn't put it down. The plot is set during the latter part of WWII. Catherine Blake, a German spy living in London is trying to uncover the secrets of the allied invasion. She is getting dangerously close. And trying to thwart her at every corner is a counter-spy operation, spear-headed by Alfred Vicary. Various sub-plots are woven in along the way, not the least of which is the inter-office manipulating by devious members of the allied high command. The plot is both solid and full of surprises, and the climax very satisfying. The characters are wonderfully developed. At times I was reminded of Follet's "The Eye of the Needle", which is high praise in itself. Daniel Silva really dealt with the WWII setting wonderfully. It would be great to have another WWII spy story from him. I can wholeheartedly recommend this novel, and it is a great introduction to Daniel Silva's works, which must rate as some of the best espionage/suspense works today.
Book Review: Rat-a-tat-tat spy fic! Summary: 5 Stars
Hot diggity dawg and an M-1's rat-a-tat-tat for the best WWII spy book to cross my path in years. I dug this zoot suit-sporting jitterbugging book. It takes place in Englad before D-day, so you kind of know how it's probably going to end, but D-do read this D-dynamite book! It may be long, but it's worth the effort.
If you like your books hot and twisted, read Rabid: A Novel by Kenyon, Tree of Smoke: A Novel by Johnson, The Pugilist at Rest: Stories by Jones, and Fight Club: A Novel by Palahniuk.

Book Review: Sacre bleu! Summary: 1 Stars
Someone reported all my 3 negative reviews of Daniel Silva books and got them removed! Hmm, I wonder who that could be.
I am rather annoyed at this because I spent quite a lot of time detailing why I didn't like this book, reasonably, I thought. Apparently, someone had decided that they did not follow the review guidelines. Well, I used no profanities. OK, there were some spoilers, but not more than I usually read in other reviews. Not single worded, no phone numbers, no solicitations, etc. Maybe whoever it was just didn't like my negative review. The last time I checked, the 1st amendment still applies in this country.
OK, so let me try to post another review of why I didn't like this book without violating any review guidelines, and I'm not going to spend 30 mins on it like last time.
I thought the book was very poorly written and very boring. It was very tedious to finish but I made it to the end. I've read a couple of other Daniel Silva books, but neither one of them could change my mind that he is an author that I don't like. I will not be buying any more of his books.
Book Review: Silva is taking a month out of my life! Summary: 5 Stars
I stumbled across "Mark of the Assassin" a couple weeks ago. Upon completion, I purchased every available novel written by Silva.
"The Unlikely Spy" is more complicated than most thrillers. It is also not as polished as his later novels. It does clearly show a remarkable talent for research and crafting a tale that expertly weaves both fact and fiction.
My theory however is that maybe Canaris outfoxed Hitler into biting on the ruse that Normandy was not our first choice. I think much of Hitlers staff wanted the war to end and the madness to stop. Clearly better to have the Americans get their first over the Ivans.
Either that or Hitlers spy network pretty well sucked. Of course, gathering accurate intelligence is hard to do. That is why it is usually wrong.
If you like spy thrillers, Silva is at the top of the game.
