Book Review: A Rich Tapestry

Disclaimer: I'm not big on vampires or the supernatural, but I loved this book. It drew me in slowly, but once engaged, I could not put it down. What's to love?
1) Charnas brilliantly explores the psychology of her vampire (what drives him, how he responds to the challenges that constantly face him), as a biologist might explore the habits of a tiger. If you're fascinated by wildlife and have a healthy, non-anthropomorphic, non-exploitative respect for species other than your own, you're likely to find this book rivetting.
2) With equal brilliance, Charnas explores what it means to be human and the range of possibilities our humanness allows us to choose from.
3) The book suggests how we all feed on each other, but how different our motivations can be: survival; lust for power/wealth/fame; need to protect one's own autonomy; need to heal ourselves.
4) The book also illuminates the capacity we humans have to feed each other, through compassion, through love, and through art.
4) Even the best of books often leave me with a feeling of dissatisfaction, of being let down or unfulfilled, when I reach the end. This book comes to one of the most satisfying conclusions I've ever encountered in fiction.
