Belly dance celebrities Neena and Veena bring their roadmap for health, happiness, beauty and sensuality to the reader in this nicely presented little book and DVD. "To shine with true beauty," they write in the introduction, "you must first know the real, inner you -- and then express it." Devotees of the Bellytwins, as they are lovingly known, follow their path and swear by it.
While none of the book's sections are extremely deep and detailed, there is something here for every woman to think about. Throughout the book the word "belly" is used to denote the abdomen, and also the "inner belly" that is "the center of the unique person that is you."
So many women feel that they have a little too much of that unique person, so once we're "down with" the belly point of view, the Bellytwins start with their eating program. They endorse all healthy, natural foods with the once-a-week grapefruit fast. Makes sense. They go on to encourage relaxing and energizing to music, and devote a chapter to learning the belly dance; the DVD partners this chapter. Beauty tips with a focus on spa treatments are a much-needed sequel to the workout, and the book gives suggestions and recipes for spa potions to make at home.
Wardrobe section? Comfort and sensuality are key, whether dancing for your loved one or sitting at the boardroom table. Makeup? They encourage the reader to experiment and enhance her best features. Now you're ready to love yourself and stride out onto the stage of life.
The Way of the Belly: 8 Essential Secrets of Beauty, Sensuality, Health, Happiness, and Outrageous Fun is a light, fun read that showcases Deena and Vreena's serious investment in their lifestyle. There is a thing or two to be learned here, and if you think there is room for improvement in your personal presentation, you might find something surprisingly worthwhile. It's an entertaining little workshop on developing a positive self-image, even if you decide against the glitter and finger cymbals. Four stars.
