Book Reviews of The Wedding

Book Review: Spark's best book...
Summary: 5 Stars

After reading this book, you just want to say "ahhhh." It is sweet and heartwrenching. Love described at its best. The perfect story of a when a marriage can survive.

Book Review: Sweet, if predictable
Summary: 3 Stars

Winston Lewis and wife Jane have been married for the better part of 30 years, but their relationship in deep trouble. Winston, an estate lawyer, is as dry and unsentimental as an old boot. After forgetting yet another anniversary, Jane seems ready to give up on him. Rather belatedly, Winston sets out on a journey to win back his wife's love, if there's still enough time. He plans an elaborate anniversary weekend to make up for his past failings, but those plans are thrown into disarray when his oldest daughter announces her plan to marry on the same weekend.

"The Wedding" is at its best when it conveys the sense of helpless despair that Winston feels as his marriage breaks apart on the rocks of his indifference. Every time Jane's averts her glance, sighs or pulls away, you can feel Winston's own heart breaking. But the standout character in the novel is old Noah, Jane's elderly father. He's a Southern romantic from the old school, and is lost in nostalgia for Allie, his wife who was lost to Alzheimer's Disease. Noah still speaks with his beloved, and the family thinks he may be losing his marbles.

Focusing as it does on Winston, Jane and Noah, there is relatively little narrative room for author Sparks to maneuver in. The plot basically has Winston ruminating on lost opportunities in his marriage or planning. This lends a certain predictability to the book. But the last third does hold genuine surprises. There a worse ways to spend a few evenings of reading.

I TRULEY LOVED THIS BOOK. IT WAS AS GOOD IF NOT BETTER THAN THE NOTEBOOK.
I FOUND MYSELF IN TEARS AT SOME POINTS AND THE ENDING WAS SUCH AN UNEXPECTED PULL OF YOUR HEART STRINGS.

Great book, I love chick flicks and this is it's equal. Not a big reader but this kept your interest. It was recommended by a friend that said it was her favorite. I can see why, great book.
