On a steamy summer morning, in Iowa, Martin Gregory rushes to his neighbor, Antonia Clark's home. When Martin woke up that morning, his daugter, Petra, wasn't in her room. He wonders if she is with Antonia's daughter, Calli, Petra's best friend.
When Antonia checks, Calli isn't home either. In panic, and fearing the worst, police are notified, a search is begun and the action grabs the reader's interest and locks it into the story as events play out.
Calli is a sweet, seven-year-old who suffers from selective mutism due to an incident when she was a toddler. Her father, Griff, is an abusive alcoholic who seems to doubt that he is really Calli's father, since Antonia and Deputy Sheriff Louis had been seeing each other around that time.
Calli's brother Ben, is a twelve-year-old who bravely tries to take care of his little sister.
The incident in which Calli stopped talking was a fight between Griff and Antonia (Tony). As a result of the fight, Tony lost the child she was carrying and when Calli began to cry, Griff screamed at he to "shut up."
We learn about the events from the characters' point of view. This gives the reader more knowledge of what each character is experiencing, while having a feeling of being close to the action.
I enjoyed the spunkiness of Calli and the courageousness of her brother, Ben. Calli's mother was a rather submissive character, perhaps symbolic of an abused wife.
However, the reason that the girls were taken to the mountain was never satisfactorily explained and I felt that the conclusion was too convenient as a solution to a problem in the plot.
