Book Reviews of The Weight of Water

Book Review: A Needed Look at the Weirdness of Humankind
Summary: 5 Stars

This book is altogether unexpected. Seemingly innocent throughout the first half, the story about a young immigrant bride stuck on a New Hampshire island and a photographer/mother/narrator blends together seamlessly. The commonalities between the two get creepier and creepier however, as Shreve explores jealousy, suspicion, love, and hate in human beings. The shameful things that come about shake the reader to her very core. This book comes highly recommended for those readers willing to forgive themselves for being human.

Book Review: A Real Page Turner
Summary: 5 Stars

From the moment I picked up the book, until the last sentence was read, I was enthralled. Shreve has really outdone herself with this one.. amazing.

Book Review: A Slow and Painful Read
Summary: 1 Stars

This was a horrible read for me. I found that the author spent so much time on detail that I forgot what she was explaining. I often found myself sleepy after just a couple of pages. I did not have a problem following the different time frames as I have heard many people complain. I was originally attracted to this book because of the true murder content.

Book Review: A Work of Genius - A Moment in Time
Summary: 5 Stars

The Weight of Water came to me at a one-dollar-a-book-store-closing sale almost 12 years after it was first published. Anita Shreve has an uncanny way of getting inside of a moment - a glance, a look, a gesture, a slight, a frown, a smile, or whatever. Although a late-comer, having read but two of her books thus far, I love her perspective on things big and small. In this book are two interlocking stories, one contemporary and one over a hundred years old; one is a murder mystery based on an actual and recorded event and the other is a relational jigsaw puzzle; both deeply troubling. Shreve masterfully connects the stories and their players, weaving past to present with a skillful combination of long narratives, verbatim court testimony and shorter dialogues that come and go more quickly, but seamlessly, bridging the emotional debris of festering doubt, hurt, misunderstandings and resentments from one century to the next. Not a book for someone looking for a cheerful read. The Weight of Water is a somber and unusual work of genius that I highly recommend.

Book Review: A beautifully written book!
Summary: 5 Stars

I loved this book! I am amazed at the author's ability to write from the perspective of a woman living in the 1800's - The writing flowed so nicely. This book was full of suspense, intrigue and emotion. I was captivated by both the main characters - Jean and Maren - The ending for both main characters suprised me! I strongly recommend reading this book!
