Book Reviews of The Winner

Book Review: "Predictable" suspense thriller
Summary: 2 Stars

Aside from the the villian dressing up (and cross dressing), this was a tried and tested and tired story line - beautiful and feisty heroine, hunky hero with a shady past (that just happens conveniently to be in the FBI) and crafty crimminal who is too clever for his own good (much like the master crimminals in the James Bond series). The overall idea of rigging a lottery is a good one for a thriller but the story line and the relationships and histories of the characters were so contrived and convenient that it made for predictable reading.

Book Review: ...from rags to riches to comfort to luxury to danger...
Summary: 4 Stars

You are a young woman with a small daughter working in a dead end waitressing job and with an abusive husband to boot. One day a stranger approaches you offering a chance to win the national lottery and a way out of your dull dreary grinding existence, but with a catch. Many of us no doubt would take it up in a flash whatever the special conditions attached. A once in a lifetime opportunity to be "the winner". This is the scenario that is presented to LuAnn Tyler, the heroine in David Baldacci's latest thriller. Through circumstances beyond her control the inevitable happens, she is forced to flee with her daughter and thats just the beginning. Enough said.

Really enjoyed this story mainly because of its rags to riches scenario. But there was also LuAnn herself with her spunkiness and grit. We are all familiar with a solo mother out there just like her who has suffered and survived.Ready and willing to sacrifice all for their kids albeit without the aid of swiss bank accounts and gold amex cards. It is no surprise that LuAnn trusts very few people in her life and is wary of strangers. But to show she is not totally frigid the author manages to throw in a love interest with a just as mysterious past. But can he be trusted ?

David Baldacci writes an exciting thriller here and I recommend it to all his fans. His villains arn't just bad but goodlooking suave and affluent as well. Looking forward to his next offering.

Book Review: ..never a dull moment
Summary: 4 Stars

The Winner proved to be a great page turner that I have recommended to anyone who needs to "lighten up" their reading. From beginning to end, the perils of Luann jump off the page in a believeable, readable fashion. This is a great break from Grisham, a fine respite from Kellerman, and a welcome change from Lawrence Block...a great read!

Book Review: 1st timer
Summary: 5 Stars

This is the first book I've read by David Baldacci, and all I can say is that it was awesome, just reading the back cover made me feel compelled to read it. It was a page-turner and I wanted to cry when I had to put it down so I could get school reading done. It's one of the best books I've ever read!

Book Review: 600 pages of non-stop excitement and great writing
Summary: 5 Stars

Alot of people write in saying that the characters aren't believable. They definitely aren't. But just like a movie, I want to leave my brain at the door and let the words take my mind on a vacation to anyplace but reality. David Baldacci has created likeable characters and a suspenseful, exciting story. It was 620 pages long and I was begging for it not to end. I highly recommend this book to anyone who, like me, want to sink into someone else's world.
