Book Reviews of The Wisdom of Menopause: Creating Physical and Emotional Health and Healing During the Change, Revised EditionBook Review: Author's Outdated Attitude Gets in the Way Summary: 2 Stars
First of all, let me state that I am not against alternative treatments. What I am against is the a lot of the misty-eyed psychobabble and fire-in-the-belly conspiracy theories that tend to go along with it.
I think there is a lot of useful information in this book. What I object to is the author's dismissal of most traditional treatments as somehow substandard just because these are not the kinds of treatments she wants. She seems to think it's somehow a bad thing to want to have a hysterectomy, and all of her writing is biased to that end. She presumes that the reader wants to find a doctor who is "attuned to your desire to keep your uterus."
She also presumes that the women who read this book are in stifling interpersonal relationships -- "Do you have to justify the purchase of new clothes to your partner?" While I will easily agree that there are a number of women who have been raised to remain passive about their own needs, especially with regard to their health care, I don't think such deeply ingrained issues can be adequately addressed in chapters with titles such as "Pelvic Health and Empowerment."
The best thing I can say about this book is that I'm glad I didn't buy it for myself. It was a gift from a well-meaning person who I'm sure found it to be very helpful; unfortunately, it's not going to be much use to a generation of women who don't necessarily feel a spiritual connection to "the sacred feminine." As far as I am concerned, the uterus and ovaries are just parts of my body, not the root of my identity.
Book Review: Awesome Book Summary: 5 Stars
I found this book so empowering! We 'boomer' women are 46.5 MILLION strong and we are going to change the world! EVERY WOMAN needs to read this and tell every other woman she loves. Finally, I understand WHY I have been feeling the way I have over the last 8 years (physically and emotionally), why now that the 'reproductive veil' has lifted I have such a need to re-create myself. I have been daughter, wife, mother....NOW I GET TO BE ME! Thanks so much Dr. Northrup, you have given me language to expain feelings.
Book Review: Awsome Information! Summary: 5 Stars
I was confused after leaving my OB/GYN's office with the vauge explanation of what I was experinceing but after reading this book it all made sense and gave me tools and recommendations to help alleviate my menopausal symptoms.
This book was a Godsend and will keep it handy for reference through this turbulant time I am going through.

Book Review: Bad outweighs the good Summary: 2 Stars
This book does have some information that is useful, but it is overshadowed by the author's questionable (and sometimes insulting) emotional analysis of possible causes of menopausal symptoms. Her "spiritual" evaluations seem to reflect her own emotional difficulties rather than provide any useful information for other women.
Minus the drivel, this book might have some value. But the other content leaves me to question whether I would want to put my trust in any of her advice. I don't need to be analyzed. I need clear and relevant information. I will be looking elsewhere.
Book Review: Better choices = better thyroid Summary: 5 Stars
As always, I find great value in Christiane's perspective. One of the positive results of making better choices (5th chakra, throat, center of choice and will) in my life was being able to get off of Synthroid. Having grown up in a rationalistic, non-religious, intellectual home, it took quite a while and some menopausal wisdom to learn how to understand other forms of intelligence. Thank you Christiane and Carolyn Myss.
