Book Reviews of The Womanly Art of Breastfeeding: Seventh Revised Edition (La Leche League International Book)Book Review: manual for moms Summary: 5 StarsI used an earlier edition of this book twenty years ago when I had my son. It saved me much anxiety - offered the best possible mother-tested advice not only about nursing but about nurturing and discipline. My son turned out great! The Womanly Art of Breastfeeding: Seventh Revised Edition (La Leche League International Book) Now I give copies of this edition to all the new moms that I know.
Book Review: Breastfeeding twins? Buy a different book! Summary: 2 StarsUnless you like to be preached to, don't buy this book. I am expecting twins and plan on breastfeeding. I figured during pregnancy I wanted to learn as much about breastfeeding as possible. I was told by the LLL that "The Womanly Art of Breastfeeding," was a book to promote positive feelings about breastfeeding. They were undoubtedly wrong. This book is nothing of the sorts. It strongly preaches their agenda and basically says if you do anything to the contrary you are doing something wrong. Especially with twins the whole dynamic is different. It may be necessary for your babies to receive supplemental feedings/formula, and using some part parent directed feeding routine may be the only way mom will get any sleep. Both of these are frowned upon and mother in these situations is totally belittled by "The Womanly Art of Breastfeeding." If you happen to be expecting twins there are definitely better books out there. "Mothering Multiples," also a LLL book paints a more realistic picture of breastfeeding and caring for twins.
Book Review: Nursing Mother of an 11 month old Summary: 5 StarsI absolutely love this book. I've been nursing my son for over 11 months now, and I still refer to it when I have a question come up. Yes, this book is very biased in believing that breastfeeding is best (it is!). I was fortunate enough that I've never had any issues while breastfeeding my son. I've only had 1 breast infection, which was quickly diagnosed with this book. I'm now back at work, and pumping twice a day, and I feel like I get support from this book in telling me I'm doing the right thing, instead of the rude remarks from my coworkers.
I'll be the first to tell you that I'm a breastfeeding snob and feel it's the only way a child should be fed. I feel that this book also teaches this philosophy. I also saw my sister struggle to nurse her son (born 4 months after mine), and this book was no help to her. I strongly believe that each mother has the right to choose how she feeds her child, wether it be formula or breastmilk. So, if you are nursing a toddler, this book will give you the support you need to continue doing so.
My mom was an LLL leader back in the early 80's and she gave me her old copy to read while I was in the hospital. It was marked with lots of side notes she had written in and the same advice in the book from then proves to be true today. I have the newest revised version, and the basic philosophy is still the same.
LOVE this book. One of my favorites.
Book Review: Great Help Summary: 5 StarsI bought this for my daughter-in-law and she loves it. I had the orginal when my children were small, and this is a revised edition. It answers absolutely everything you need to know with breast feeding or any problems you would have.
Book Review: Touchy-feely Summary: 3 StarsTechnically, this book is very informative, but it's a little too touchy-feely and preachy for me. I don't want to have "natural" childbirth. I want my epidural as soon as they'll give it to me, but I also want to breastfeed my baby (I don't believe that you can't do both--I have 6 nieces and nephews, all of whom were born with c-sections or epidurals, and all of whom were breastfed). I also don't need parenting advice from an organization that essentially thinks that women are cows with their udders hanging out for their young to attach to on demand. It would be nice if I didn't have to work, but I do. Period. Yes, I will still make more money working than not. I really wish I'd read a review like this before I bought this book--I would have saved myself from PAYING to be exposed to such a judgmental organization. They may be very helpful, but after reading this book, I would NEVER feel comfortable going to one of their meetings. I'm going to just stick to my "Nursing Mother's Companion."
