Book Review: Good and Bad
Summary: 4 Stars

I've really enjoyed this book. It is very informative and has taught me a lot about breastfeeding without pain. It also was a great motivator and comforter to read the many benefits of breastfeeding. The only thing that I would warn to other readers is that some of the "facts" in the book about how you should be caring for your child (ie: a 'family bed', breastfeeding ONLY, ect.)are very biased toward certain opinions.

Book Review: be cautious using this book
Summary: 1 Stars

This may be the classic book on breastfeeding, but it really didn't paint a realistic portrait about breastfeeding given my experiences. My impression is that the book basically is designed to convince you to breastfeed. If you're already convinced, and breastfeeding comes easily for you, you won't need this book.

If you're convinced you want to breastfeed your baby, and things go wrong, this book is NOT helpful. The platitudes offered for how to reverse a low milk supply, and the general notion that breastfeeding works for virtually anyone who tries it, is actually a dangerous message. I read the book, thought if you wanted to breastfeed, then it would work out. Not at all the case, and the impression that it will all work out actually kept me from getting help more quickly.

The best reference from the La Leche League is actually at their website. If you need help with breastfeeding, their Mother to Mother forums are outstanding and free and chock full of information:

A far more helpful book is "The Nursing Mother's Companion". This one is much more down to earth and helpful in all kinds of scenarios.

Book Review: I hate to be negative, but...
Summary: 2 Stars

I never thought I'd be writing a negative review of this book. Before I had my baby I was, as one reviewer put it, "militantly" pro-breastfeeding, and couldn't understand why anyone wouldn't nurse. I gave birth naturally and had a healthy, beautiful baby, but he would not latch on properly and lost 16 oz (more than 10% of his birthweight) by the time he was 4 days old. Every nurse I had in the hospital, 2 lactation consultants, and my pediatrician all failed to get him latched on right. I started pumping on day 5 and continued for three months, after which I had to stop because needing to pump all the time was seriously interfering with taking care of my baby (not to mention that it was always a bit painful and I hated cleaning the pump all the time).

Even though I gave what I consider to be a huge effort to provide my baby with breastmilk, this book still made me feel as though I wasn't a good mother and was robbing my baby of the comfort and security they say can only be provided through nursing. I had to put the book not just on the shelf but out of sight because I felt like crying every time I looked at it. It gives the impression that your baby will not bond with you if you don't nurse him. I appreciate the fact that LLL has encouraged many women to try breastfeeding who otherwise may not have, but I really think they go too far in extolling the psychological benefits of it. I would have been better off never having bought the book.

Book Review: Must have for Breastfeeding Moms!
Summary: 5 Stars

Not only a great breastfeeding resource but a great parenting resource as well. Every pregnant woman should read this book.
