Book Reviews of The Womanly Art of Breastfeeding: Seventh Revised Edition (La Leche League International Book)Book Review: The best for learning the Breast! Summary: 5 StarsI bought and read this book before my son was born. I felt very informed and knowledgable about breastfeeding and very confident from the get go and I swear it was because of this book. Nursing has been very good for us and I love it more than I ever thought I would. I recently bought it for my friend expecting her third but who was planning to nurse for the first time. After reading it, she became a breastfeeding educator with her friends who had problems. She's now nursing a beautiful baby girl and couldn't be happier. She agrees that this book gave her the confidence to do it.
Book Review: wonderful book Summary: 5 StarsI first read this book in 1974 when I was pregnant with my first baby. It helped me to breastfeed him even though I had had an emergency Caesar and everything had gone wrong that could go wrong. In those days it was a slim little volume but it contained all the information that I needed.
I have just bought it for a younger member of our family and this new edition has been a wonderful help to her. There is nothing quite like "The Womanly Art of Breastfeeding".
Book Review: Wonderful book Summary: 4 StarsI bought this book while I was pregnant and started reading it then. I thought it was a great resource. Then, I was actually supposed to go back to work. That said, I really liked the book but had a few issues with it. Most of these issues were resolved after a bit of thought.
Being a nurse, I appreciate medical books and really like the concise way in which the author explained lactation and the solution to a lot of breastfeeding issues that may pop up. The drawback to liking conciseness is that I wasn't so keen on reading about all the other mothers' stories. I did get over that once I realized that the way this book is written entirely mirrors the way LLLI runs.
Reading the previous reviews (and hearing it first hand), I see that some of the readers thought that the tone of the book was very "propaganda-like", that it "promotes the LLL way too much", "makes you feel guilty or like a failure if you don't end up breastfeeding" and is "anti formula". I don't agree with any of these statements but seeing so many women had that type of experience reading the book made me wonder. The conclusion I came to was that a lot of the women I know who made these comments were unsuccessful in their breastfeeding attempts. I believe their distaste was related to their own emotions rather than the book. I also believe that LLL has the right to promote the organization. After all, LLLI is a non profit organization who needs funding. The "anti formula" comment is self explanatory to me. This IS a book about breastfeeding after all.
Finally, before deciding to stay home with my son, I did wish there was a more extensive section about women returning to work while continuing to breastfeed and the juggling act that comes with it. Fortunately for me, I didn't go back for more than 4 shifts before my husband and I decided to have me stay home. I still believe there should be a bit more about this subject in the book.
This was, and still is, an excellent resource for me.
Once I got over the amount of mothers' quotes in the book, I realized this: What better way to show mother to mother support than putting mothers' experiences and comments in the book! It just completes and rounds up the whole LLL philosophy. Wonderful!
Book Review: Awsome book Summary: 5 StarsI recommend this to anyone breastfeeding or thinking of breastfeeding. It really helped me succeed with my son.
Book Review: Best breast-feeding handbook Summary: 5 StarsEvery pregnant woman should have this book! In the late nineteen fifties, when less than five percent of babies were breastfed, these authors got together to change things around by starting La Leche League. Every woman should know the fact, not well publicised (and why is breast cancer research not shouting this from the hill tops?) that five years of breast-feeding provides a 75 percent drop in the incidence of breast cancer. Little girls that are breasfed also have less incidence of breast cancer in adulthood. Thank God for La Leche League and this book!!
