Book Review: A book even for those who thought they weren't interested in Wright
Summary: 5 Stars
This novel was a revelation to me on several levels. First, that having read it I will be instantly interested when some reference is made to Frank Lloyd Wright. I will have to revisit his Hollyhock House in my hometown here in Los Angeles, too, now that I have a new perspective on him and his acolytes as well (such as Neutra). Second, this is the first T.C. Boyle novel I've read, and I can't say enough good things about the way the characters are drawn, the language crafted, and the momentum kept at a perfect pace. Lastly, I had some reservations about the events being described in reverse chronological order, having heard that irony would be better achieved by having the first wife first, etc. I needn't have worried, because Boyle has mastered this to the extent that the climax of the novel comes near the end; the reader is well-prepared for it.
The first wife, Kitty, isn't explored very much. I didn't mind this, because everything that comes after her is so engrossing and revealing of the man...and the era.
