In this unexpectedly subtle thriller, Paul Copeland, a county prosecutor in Essex, New Jersey, is in the middle of a rape case on a college campus, all too familiar in recent news, but one that has no facile denouement. Although his defendant comes to court with a history that is decidedly unfavorable, Copeland is determined to see justice prevail, going after the ably defended frat boys accused of the crime with his usual singleness of purpose. But these young men's wealthy families have the luxury of extraordinary resources and are willing to pull out all the stops. It becomes increasingly obvious as the story unfolds, that everyone, without exception, has secrets, has made mistakes along the way. While Copeland is still grieving the recent loss of his wife to cancer and raising his six-year-old daughter, it is his more distant past that haunts the troubled prosecutor.
Twenty years ago, while he was a counselor, four young people walked into the woods surrounding the camp. Two of the teenagers were later found murdered, the other two never accounted for, but assumed buried somewhere in the dark tangle of the woods. One of the victims was Copeland's seventeen-year-old sister. The girl's loss shattered the already fragmented Russian immigrant family; later, "Cope's" mother returned to Russia, leaving father and son alone with their sorrow until the father's recent death. Now, twenty years later, in the middle of an important case, Cope is confronted with a tantalizing clue that reawakens all the old questions about what really happened that night in the woods. Suddenly the past is as real as yesterday, Paul reexamining every detail about that terrible night, including suspicions that he was somehow involved.
His thoughts increasingly fragmented by competing issues, Cope desperately tries to keep his rape case on track, at the same time returning to the painful past in search of new answers. Along with the reappearance of his first real love that fateful summer, Cope allows himself to hope for a different outcome given recent events; he pursues a long, twisted path through vague memories of his youth, gradually piecing together a picture far different from what he previously believed. Beautifully structured, with dramatic unpredictability, Coben's protagonist maintains his integrity against significant odds, at the same time revealing the extent of denial that results from unexpected tragedy. Flayed by each new revelation, Copeland refuses to give up, willing to confront his demons, no matter how painful. Luan Gaines/2007.
