Book Reviews of The WoodsBook Review: Dark secrets and gripping suspense. Summary: 4 Stars
This was my first Harlan Coben book and I enjoyed it so much I have purchased several more for my kindle. While this is a much plowed field I felt Mr. Coben kept it fresh and interesting.
The book is set in New Jersey, the main character is Paul Copeland, a county prosecuter with a high-profile case prosecuting two young men for raping a stripper. One of the defendant's father is a very wealthy and powerful man who will stop at nothing to persuade Copeland to give up the case. In trying to dig up the dirt to help convince Copeland, some very old skeletons come falling out of the closet.
From there the story unfolds into a riveting read.
Book Review: Disappointing; no real suspense. Summary: 2 Stars
Based on the plot I read on Amazon, I thought this would be a suspenseful and somewhat scary novel. However, I was highly disappointed. There weren't as many plot twists as I had expected (though that's not always a bad thing). But there were very few passages that had any suspense at all, and the scenes that took place in the woods were not as scary as they could have been. I could have forgiven this if there was a great ending, but the ending was quite anti-climactic and unexciting.
I love these types of books but The Woods did not connect with me at all.
Book Review: Enjoyable! Summary: 4 Stars
I have read a number of Harlan Coben books, and I found "The Woods" to be very enjoyable. Although his plots all have a certain similarity, each one is different enough to keep me guessing and intrigued. The Woods is no exception. The mystery surrounding the disappearance of the main character's sister at a summer camp kept me entertained until the end. While it was not as exciting as some of his books, it still held my interest and was a fast, fun read.
Book Review: Entertaining, full of suspense Summary: 5 Stars
This was the first non-series I've read of Coben's. Love the pace of the book, easy to read, language flowed easily.
Book Review: Excellent thriller, plot driven, well written. Summary: 4 Stars
The Woods is a wonderful thriller about facing the past. Sometimes the past needs to stay the past.
The story is fast moving and enveloping. The characters are well written and deep. Each character is well written and deep. Even those that are secondary or minor characters seem to come alive in a way that only a great author can do.
It is also the first person narrative that I could get through. Though I usually detest books written in this voice, Mr. Coben pulls it off through excellent exposition and witty commentary.
The negative, which I guess can be viewed as a positive, is that sometimes Coben keeps you hanging on with some scenes that are longer than they should. He usually does this with sidebars and often times long drawn out dialogue. But in a thriller it keeps you turning the pages, instead of just giving you the answer he makes you hold on for as long as you can until he gives up the goods.
Overall, this is a well written exciting story. A real page turner.
