Book Reviews of The WoodsBook Review: Formulaic, Lousy writing!! Summary: 1 Stars
I wanted to read Tell No One by Harlan Coben, since the French movie based on the book got rave reviews... I ended up reading this instead. I have not read any other Harlan Coben books before this...
In my opinion the book was extremely formulaic. The DA, the investigator, the victim's father, ex-KGB thug... all seem to be caricatures from popular TV crime dramas! I did not find their actions, dialogues (you cannot call it normal speech or conversation!!), loyalties, thought processes convincing or intelligent.
To be fair to the author, I was extremely interested in the plot for the first few chapters... But midway, the plot gets murky to the point where I did not care anymore about the characters or their 'I Know What I did Last Summer' angst. The relationship between the DA and Lucy was as juvenile as something an amateur teenage author would have written in a first draft - 80s cheesy pop numbers to capture the mood and thoughts? Utterly unimaginative.
All in all by the time I got to the end I was disappointed... I didn't care for the plot or the ending or the people... Too bad even for a summer beach read.
Book Review: Great Book. Great Author Summary: 4 Stars
My Uncle told me about this author and thought I would like his style. Well I love it. This was the first of his books that I have read and they all keep getting better and better. I love all the points of reference around New Jersey as that is where I grew up.
Book Review: Great Read! Summary: 5 Stars
This guy is gifted. I so enjoyed this work that I just had to add my comment. A little slow at first, it grabbed me around page 80 and I simple could not put it down. I had just read a James Patterson novel over a period of two weeks (I read at night before going to sleep). Then I began this book and I never turned the light off. Going from Patterson to Coben was like going from a DC Marvel comic book to Hemingway. At least it seemed that way to me.
Book Review: Great book! I could not put it down! Summary: 5 Stars
I read a review the other day about a reviewer that picked up a book and 20 hours later they finished it. That has applied to me with this book. I simply could not put it down, except when I absolutely had to! It is wonderfully written. Twists and turns galore! What am I doing next? Looking for more Coben to read. EXCELLENT!!!!!
Book Review: Grips you from the start and won't let go Summary: 5 Stars
This is truly a page-turner of a novel. Very well-written (in the usual excellent Harlan Coben style) and intense. The truth is revealed slowly and succintly and the progression is forthright and on target. I did not figure it all out, even at the surprising twist at the end, I was struck by how it all came together. I read this book in less than a day and the characters to me came alive, especially crazy Ira. I highly recommend this book and I think you will get as totally involved in it as I was. The dialogue is crisp, witty and intelligent. 5 stars from me. Bravo, Mr. Coben.
