Book Reviews of The Woods

Book Review: Not Coben's best....maybe 3 stars
Summary: 3 Stars

Harlan Coben's series starring Myron Bolitar are must read books. This book, "The Woods," is not worth your time. No, it's not a terrible read, but it is far from Coben's best.

In this mystery/thriller, Paul Copeland is a big time district attorney who is still grieving about a camp that he helped out with while in high school. His sister and a few others were brutally killed at the camp....or were they?

Skip ahead twenty years. Copeland is a widowder with a young daughter. His life is not bad, but he still wonders about what happened at the camp out in those woods. The plots are everywhere as Copeland deals with a rape case involving an call girl and a fraternity house along with another political issue about his wife's foundation that raises money for cancer research. Oh, and there is a KGB twist along with a serial killer in prison. Confused? You should be.

The book was too long, too weird and too confusing. He meets his old girlfriend from the camp and the book just never got rolling. When it ended I was disappointed. Coben can do far better. Skip this unless you just want to read all of his works.

Book Review: Once again, a brilliant thriller by H. Coben
Summary: 5 Stars

A twenty-year-old mystery resurfaces, about four teenagers who went missing from the woods. One of them was Paul Copeland's (Cope) sister. Cope is now a prosecutor and a widower with a young daughter. Another body turns up. And things start spinning, the past has to be faced once again...

Another brilliant thriller by H. Coben. As usual, fast and gripping, a true page-turner, until the very end. What I particularly like about his books is that he never leaves any details out, nothing goes unanswered. That's what a good, entertaining mystery book should always be about!

Book Review: One heck of a roller coaster ride!
Summary: 3 Stars

I have to admit, I was so disgusted with the court case re-hash (and revision) of the Duke "rape" case that I almost set this book aside. I'm glad I didn't. I gaggingly suffered through that part only because the premise of the book, Paul's sister's disappearance in the woods at summer camp twenty years ago, was so riveting.

I'm glad I stuck with it. This book is one heck of a roller coaster ride and Paul Copeland (Harlan Coben?) will manage to tick you off no matter what your political beliefs are!

The book raises some important questions. It's great to have morals but how will those morals survive when it comes to protecting YOUR loved one? How far will you go?

Good book.

Book Review: One part of storyline a little unbelievable, but definitely worth reading!
Summary: 4 Stars

This was a really thrilling book that I couldn't put down. I thought the relationship between the narrator and his high school sweetheart was pretty unbelievable. Otherwise, it was perfect!

Book Review: Ordinary people with extraordinary secretes. . .
Summary: 5 Stars

Just started reading Coben recently; I had recommended "Tourist in the Yucatan" to a friend. He already read "Tourist" and recommended I should also like Coben as their styles were similar. Well, I took my friends advice and have become a big Harlen Coben fan! I like the way Coben takes seemingly ordinary people and then puts them in extraordinary circumstances. I think it makes for a much better thriller than the typical world weary cops and detectives or the super-human antics of some of the genre's characters. With Coben we real people in unreal or terrifying situations and that makes it seem all the more real. He also knows how to create emotional connections between the reader and the characters.

In this one we have a county prosecutor who is pulled into reliving an old tragedy from his youth and his loss of innocence. The story is ultimately about redemption. If you are looking for a smart thriller that does not follow the rules, I highly recommend this book!
