Book Review: Bittersweet And Charming..

This book ,on which the movie was based on(and I recommend as well) is similar in the basic plot. However it goes a little deeper (and darker) regarding the character of Val,an eccentric 13 year old piano prodigy who develops an all-consuming crush on Henry Orient,a concert pianist, with her best friend & schoolmate (& fellow misfit Marian) along for the ride. In the book,the story deals more with the friendship than with the girl's infatuation of the womanizing,rather mediocre musician. Val's background is one of a "poor little rich girl" complete with absentee parents who palm her off with a childless,artsy couple who can't seem to keep her in line and daily visits to a shrink. Marian also has to deal with the stigma of having divorced parents(this book was written 1958)and the book suggests that Val(as well as Marian) look to Mr. Orient as a kind of "Father-Figure",as inadequate as he would probably be in that area. Overall,this is a sweet story and the descriptions of 1950's NY,"splitzing"(read the book) are very picturesque. A good book for both young (and those who remember what it's like to be young..)
