Book Reviews of The Yankee Years

Book Review: A Disappointing Read
Summary: 3 Stars

Although I am a Joe Torre fan, the book was a little too heavy into the drug culture and the financial aspects. I was expecting the book to be a little more about Joe and a little less about the surrounding culture. I was also a bit surprised with the adult language. I'm not a prude, but I think the profanities and expletives were gratuitous at best. I think I got more watching Joe Torre's interviews about the book on late night TV and on the YES network. I gave the book away.

Book Review: A Must Read for RED SOX Nation
Summary: 4 Stars

As a dyed-in-the-wool Red Sox fan, I still cringe when I see replays of game 7 ALDS / 2003 at Yankee Stadium; and was not in the least surprised to discover that Joe Torre considered it to be one of his best games ever as a Yankees Coach.

Tom Verducci and Joe Torre have collaborated to create, in my opinion, a MUST READ for any Red Sox fan. It gives a whole new perspective to the "rivalry" between the two teams. I have always admired Torre as a manager, and as a player and now, as a person. Verducci has drawn out the insight and a very human side of the dreaded Yankees' skipper.

After reading the book, I can truthfully say that I was impressed. Most "sports tell-all" books come off as a bad case of sour grapes; and this one certainly could have easily followed that model. However, the quiet professionalism of Torre and the writing skill of Verducci raise the bar. I put this book in the same league as the late Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist David Halberstam's book "The Education of a Coach,".

Book Review: A Nice Flashback!
Summary: 4 Stars

I would say that this book is great for any Yankees/Baseball fans out there who really followed the Joe Torre Yankees during those years. It's funny how reading some of the poignant moments in this book, I remembered them vividly like they were just yesterday. It gives great insight on the Steinbrenner Torre relationship and how it began to resemble the Bill Martin days in the end. Winning is really everything in NY and Joe and Tom really make that the ultimate understanding in this read. There is also alot of insightful information on the steroid era and other players during those years that you may not have known about. Definitely worth reading and adding to a great collection of baseball books!

Book Review: A Red Sox Fan
Summary: 5 Stars

Believe it or not, as a Sox fan I didn't expect a scathing tell all...I got what I expected from one of the last true gents of the game. Torre's book, while pointing out some of the buises after the last Series victory comes from a place that longed for the days of the Yankee greatness he and his team created. I came away with a new respect for some of the players I despised for their greatness. It's not about the numbers, it's about the team and game. The rest takes care of itself.

Book Review: A Red Sox fan who enjoyed this book!
Summary: 5 Stars

I am a die hard Red Sox fan who really likes Joe Torre and enjoyed this book. Besides some cool Red Sox information inside the book (how can one separate the two) the reader will get the chance to see the kind of character and strong moral standard that Torre possesses. I am intrigued by the "Yankee-Steinbrenner Machine" and this was the original reason that piqued my curiosity.

I am happy for Torre as he coaches the Dodgers and has experienced sweet justice as the Yankees did not make the 2008 playoffs. That made the Red Sox fan in me ecstatic and the Torre fan happy as well.

This is a great book ... I really enjoyed it.
