Book Reviews of The Yankee Years

Book Review: Boston Fan enjoys Yankee Years!
Summary: 5 Stars

The well respected Joe Torre tells it like he saw it...Interesting book with lots of inside information, must read for baseball fanatics...

Book Review: Classy Joe! Some love from Red Sox Nation....
Summary: 4 Stars

I am a proud, card carrying member of Red Sox Nation. I love the team and what the new ownership has accomplished. It's exciting. Still, I have New York roots (childhood, parents). I think Joe Torre is one of the most skilled and classiest managers in baseball. And I love Derek Jeter. Why? For the very reasons highlighted in the book... these are true, genuine baseball greats. I really liked this book... especially Joe's quotes and the player quotes. At the end, quite frankly, my eyes filled up and my heart ached because it's not the way the great Joe Torre should have left Yankee Stadium. It's another example of "limited vision" by people who happen to be a position to call the shots. My challenges with the book are to the author and publisher: 1. a little more on steroids than I think was necessary (though I understand you did a lot of writing on this hot topic); 2. a little repetitive on some of the items that Joe wanted to state for the record about his record, and about how the front office behaved (poorly, for sure); and 3. Doubleday: shame on your editor. It is rare that I read a book with seven or more errors: this book has 'em. Somebody missed some clean-up work, which is just plain sloppy. However, the book cover design and photos are awesome. Joe Torre is an important voice in baseball and the "voice of reason" between an information-centric approach to recruiting and remembering that players are people... with a heartbeat... and passion always has a lot to do with winning (and can defy the analysts). Great read. Thanks, Joe!

Book Review: Controversy? Disrespect? Where? It isn't in this book.
Summary: 4 Stars

I read the book cover to cover. I am not a Yankee fan, but I found the book to be an accurate account of the seasons when Joe Torre was managing the Yankees. There is nothing in the book disrespectful to the game, or to the Yankees. Truthfully, I have no idea what the controversy was all about. In comparison, there's probably more damning accusations in Darryl Strawberry's upcoming book than in Torre's. From what I read, Torre provided an accurate assessment of the Yankee teams, the players, and the front office personnel he dealt with, from his perspective. If you're looking for a tell-all controversial book about playing in New York, this isn't it. If you're looking for a manager's account of his experiences with the Yankees, both good and bad, from his perspective, this book's for you.

Book Review: David Cone and crying
Summary: 4 Stars

I love Joe Torre. I love the Yankees. I enjoyed this book. I read it in a day. My only criticisms: 1) I kept wondering, is this a Torre autobiography, or a David Cone biography? It seemed like David Cone was mentioned on every page. And, I have the following theory: Torre often cried in public, for whatever reason... victories, losses, etc. And maybe he's a little embarrassed by the public display of emotion. So that's why I think he had to constantly mention any time one of his players cried... Joba, Wells, Rocket, and the list goes on.

Book Review: Deserves more than 5 stars....
Summary: 5 Stars

The Yankee Years by Joe Torre and Tom Verducci has received a large amount of pre-release press especially from the New York media, but also the L. A. Times. I can't remember a book release in the recent past that has garnered so much attention before anyone has had a chance to read it. Even Steinbrenner is curious about the books contents. He should be.

The Yankee Years is a measured and thoughtful look at the years Joe Torre managed the Yankees, 1996-2007. During that time he got to and won four World Series out of five, not an easy task for anyone. Torre also stopped much of the ridicule he received from the New York media upon his appointment. If winning four World Series doesn't prove you're worthy of the job, nothing else will. The fact of the matter is that Joe Torre became the most beloved Yankees managers of all time winning the respect of the fans and his players.....also not an easy task given the list of outstanding players he worked with.

Not being a part of professional sports means that most of us read these kinds of books with a fascination made up of a combination of awe and disgust. Our only window into professional sports is comprised of the media, written and electronic and then watching the games as they come to us, one after another as the season progresses. I say this, because that means books such as the Yankee Years become our "inside" story; our life line and private peek into the insanity of what has become "professional sports."

The Yankee Years has already aggravated several A-list players that are mentioned in the book. A-Rod, reportedly referred to as A-Fraud by his team mates, and David Wells just to name two people who may not be happy with the publication of The Yankee Years.

Well written and very readable, the Yankee Years is above all else interesting and will be a book any baseball fan will want to read regardless of your team affiliation. Let's face it, the Yankees are the most storied of professional baseball teams and reading about them interests us even if we aren't fans.

Joe Torre's The Yankee Years is worth reading. I highly recommend.

Peace
