Book Reviews of The Yellow-Lighted Bookshop

Book Review: "A Bibliophile's Dream"
Summary: 4 Stars

Let me begin by saying that I almost shied away from this book because it featured the word "memoir" in its subtitle. Who needs another whining remembrance of times past? But Mr. Buzbee keeps the autobiographical material to a minimum (thank God). Instead he concentrates on the history of books, booksellers and bookstores. This book is clearly a labor of love for Buzbee--he is a man who revels in the look, smell and feel of books, new and used. His research will fascinate bibliophiles of all tastes and persuasions. I loved the story he tells of Alexander Pope meeting up with a bookseller who was printing pirated versions of his (Pope's) writings. Pope doses the guy's drink with a powerful emetic and bears witness (in THE DUNCIAD) to what follows with evident relish. I read those portions of YELLOW-LIGHTED BOOKSHOP that deal with the rise of chain stores and big box outlets with great sadness. Gord, a good friend of mine, has just closed his fine indie bookstore, Buzzword Books (in Regina) and to my mind the absence of that institution leaves a major psychic and aesthetic wound in the community. I can't think of anyone who knows books the way Gord does. An obscure offering by Celine? He can cite the publisher and year of publication off the top off his head. Hey, a couple of years ago I read a review of this book about a profanity-spewing invisible giraffe...Gord knows the title, the author and (slight exaggeration) the page count and typeface. I'll bet my last dollar Gord knows about YELLOW-LIGHTED BOOKSHOP too and gives it his stamp of approval. If you're as crazy about books as we are, you'll find this offering absolutely charming and indispensable. Make sure to buy it from your favorite indie store. And while you're at it, why not order that novel about the profanity spewing invisible giraffe? It really does exist, you know...
