Book Reviews of ThirstyBook Review: I'm Definitely Not Thirsty for More M. T. Anderson Novels After This Effort! Summary: 1 StarsPreviously I read this author's book Burger Wuss and wasn't too impressed. Thirsty however from the blurb on the back cover looked like it would be a good interesting book. However reality is just like the way a vampire gets blood from a victim's neck, it sucked! Not even an ounce of believability this story starts off with Chris the main character attending a vampire execution in the town square with his brother. Where not talking a couple of centuries ago but set in 21st century Massachusetts. The author really needed to make up his mind which period to set this book in. The reader obviously has to assume vampires exist for this novel but we all know vampire executions don't happen in the USA today. Novels are not enjoyable if you can't believe what you are reading could be happening.
Book Review: I HATED THIS BOOK Summary: 1 StarsI try not to use the word "Hate" too often, especially in reviews because it gets thrown around so much that it loses all meaning. How many times have you read "It was the worst book/movie I ever saw" from someone who will say the exact same thing next week? I reserve my more virulent venom for only those targets worthy of it.
So here we are. I HATED THIS BOOK. Why? Because it tricked me. I was actually liking it all the way to the very end. And then, POW, nothing. No ending. No resolution. No hope or purpose. Our "hero", a decent kid in a bad situation, ends up screwed. He never has a hope or a chance. Without that, there's no conflict. It's just a bunch of scenes filling out a few hundred pages until the author decides to stop writing.
I put this book down and found myself in a bit of a mild depression for the entire next day. Seriously. Very depressing. Very bad. The fact that it's aimed at young adults is even more disturbing to me since I wouldn't want a depressed teen to read it.
I know it's just a book, and I don't want to make too much of it. But damn, I hated it.
HATED, HATED, HATED, HATED, HATED IT.
Book Review: okay read, dissapointing ending Summary: 3 Starsthe book was pretty well written and the characters were well developed etc; but the ending was not what I expected and so say the least I was dissapointed. I would say that if you're on the edge about reading it, go for it, but don't expect it to ending happily.
Book Review: Loved it! Summary: 5 StarsUsually teen vampire fiction is mediocre; too angsty or too romantic, but Thirsty definitely stands out. If you didn't read the description, it is about Chris, a normal teen, who seems to be turning into a vampire. Chet, a mystical being, says that he can help Chris in return for helping him destroy Tch'muchgar, an evil being the vampires are trying to free from his cosmic prison.
It was a good book, overall, it hooked me from the beginning. The dialogue was the book's low point--which says how good this book was. The characters, as in Feed, use the word 'like' way too much, but although in Feed it seemed more natural, it just annoyed me in Thirsty, as I, a teen, rarely use the word 'like' in dialogue.
What I liked best was the creativity with approaching vampires M.T. Anderson took. Sure, they're not traditional, but they come across as a lot more realistic and human, really, than Anne Rice's. Also, Chris is a candid, likeable character. The plot was well thought out and the character's well developed, the ending was perfect for the book, and refreshingly different from all of those 'everything works out happily in the end' books, and sets it apart; makes it memorable.
To me, all of M.T. Anderson's books stand out: Feed and Burger Wuss I would also recommend.
Book Review: Bloody great read! Summary: 5 Stars Matt Anderson does it again in this Paul Zindel-Meets-Stephen King feast of entertainment. An excellent read even if you're an adult, this marriage of teen angst/young love and horror fantasy is right on target, right up there with Salem's Lot and George Romero's "Martin."
