Book Reviews of This Is Not An Assault: Penetrating the Web of Official Lies Regarding the Waco Incident

Book Review: Important book.
Summary: 4 Stars

The first thing I would like to say is that this book is still available; I just received my own copy. It is published by a company called Xlibris Corporation, which prints the books as you order them (and for much less then the current going used rate).

This is an interesting book. I've read a few books about what happened at Waco. The one I've most recommended to people has been "No More Wacos: What's Wrong with Federal Law Enforcement and How to Fix It" by David Kopel, followed by "Why Waco? Cults and the Battle for Religious Freedom in America" by James D. Tabor and Eugene V. Gallagher. Both of those were written in the late 1990's. Those were the ones I bought, after reading them from the library. Now I've bought this one (after reading it from the library.)

"This is Not An Assault" was published in 2001, so it has information that was not available to the other two books. It also deals with the event from a slightly different angle. It is not written in quite as scholarly a fashion as the other two books -- I found it to be a fairly quick read. Indeed, in the first section, it is rather humorous in parts. Until you remember just what the book is about.

Make no mistake -- the deaths of those people would have been awful no matter how it happened. A tragedy. What actually happened makes it criminal (and not on the part of the Branch Davidians, either). It boggles my mind how so much of this can be known and nothing done about it. Do you want to encourage military style attacks, and federal agents lying, to their bosses and in court!? (It is NOT the stuff of conspiracy theories, but cold, hard facts. By the way, the missing evidence _matters_. That door could prove which way the bullets were going -- the stocking cap could have proved an execution, or not -- the bodies could have given evidence of chemical concentrations -- and that footage could show what happened those last few hours -- and, by the way, isn't it so odd that so many recording devices malfunctioned? Crumbs all over their face but they didn't eat the cookies, oh, no.)

However, as bad as what happened AT Waco was, in many ways, what happened after is even worse. This book goes into what happened after Waco, as well as how, and why. Some of the implications are _very_ scary. It is very distressing that something like this could happen -- it is even more distressing to find out that, at the highest levels, our system is broken, and redress is not an option.
