Book Review: "..As one who loves his fellow men"

Greg Mortenson reminds me of James Henry Leigh Hunt's "Abou Ben Adam" who loved his fellow men, even those who live in the remotest corners of the world. One of the many things that touched me about this story is Haji Ali's determination to build a school in Korphe, although he himself was illiterate. The description of the village chief leafing through his Koran, although he couldn't read a word of Arabic, was very touching. Mortenson's story gave me a whole new perspective on Pakistan and Afghanistan. I hope I can accomplish even a fraction of Mortenson's achievements in my lifetime.
Re. the negative reviews on Amazon(especially about Mortenson's character and not the book itself) - there will always be those who attack every good deed, as if they are above all reproach. It's easy for anyone to sit in front of their computers and type out an acerbic review, but it takes courage, self-sacrifice, and a spirit of service to go out into the field and make a difference in the world. Mortenson's work is an outpouring of his heart and I wish him all the best!
