Book Reviews of Three Cups of Tea: One Man's Mission to Promote Peace . . . One School at a TimeBook Review: Here is what happened when an American doesn't quite make the top of K2 Summary: 4 StarsGreg Mortenson was exhausted after a failed attempt to reach the top of K2, arguably a more difficult climb than Everest. Finding refuge in a small village near the Karakoram range, he was helped back to strength by the kind citizens of the village. Greg noted that even in inclement weather children, especially girls, studied outdoors. In gratitude toward the villagers, Greg promised to build a school for them. The story, Three Cups of Tea, proceeds to narrate the building of this school and many others in the Pakistan hill country. He records a short period of time of being held by a group of ?terrorists in the ...istan area near Peshawar (Khyber Pass area). The book in its entirety is a good read and shows how one person with zeal and energy can help many children and their fellow villagers. Greg had "stick-to-it-tivess" and fulfilled his promise "in spades." My wife and I heard him speak in our hometown and were impressed by his sincerity. His organzation, located in Montana, is worthy of support.
Book Review: A Good American Summary: 5 StarsOnly someone living on Mars the past few decades would not wonder why the USA has such difficulty in its dealings in the Middle East. The military prowess of the US seems to be all that our leaders feel is necessary when dealing there. Greg Mortenson, a US citizen and former Himalayan mountain climber, found a better way.
Ignorance is rampant in much of the world. It is especially so in parts of Pakistan and Afghanistan where impoverished villages are all but forgotten by the national governments. Mortenson had a life-changing experience in northern Pakistan, which nearly twenty years later has profoundly impacted the people of that region.
Three Cups of Tea is Greg Mortenson's story. One could hope it could be America's story in that part of the world. Ignorance leads to many things especially when effecting large numbers of people in the same area. The radical Islamic madrassas are proliferating throughout this part of the world. Mortenson is not trying to change the world. Mortenson did not start out with a lofty goal to counter extremism. His desire was to teach children. He seeks to see Pakistani and Afghan children receive a general education without emphasis on any one cultural or religious system. He also wants so very much to see education given to little girls.
I say, "Bravo," to Greg Mortenson for story and his self-diminishment for the sake of these forgotten people.
Book Review: Incredible!! Summary: 5 StarsAn incredible real-life story of a true hero; may God bless him and his efforts, and protect him and others like him.
Book Review: Amazing! Summary: 5 StarsI stumbled upon this book after I read The Kite Runner and A Thousand Splendid Suns. These two books sparked my interest in the culture and the struggles of Afghanistan and The Middle East. I wanted to know the true tales of this region. I was also interested in reading this book because, as a teacher, I care about the education of students across the globe. This book was absolutely amazing. I envy Greg Mortenson for his courage, ambition, and ability to truly step outside of the box and make a tremendous difference in the lives of students and girls in a country where they are otherwise forgotten. Quoting the novel, "The enemy is ignorance," we owe it to ourselves to be educated on the Middle East and we owe it to the citizens of these war torn countries to do whatever we can to help. I plan on reading this novel with my high school students and starting a Pennies for Peace community service project. I know once you read this book you will be motivated to make a difference.
Book Review: A must read! Summary: 5 StarsI can not recommen this book enough, a muxt read for everyone, especially Americans. At times it was a little difficult to read becasue the people and places are difficult to pronounce, I just ended up giving everyone nicknames. Also the writer jumps around a little to much for my taste, but again, minor things when it comes to the message this book sends. Greg is one of the most amazing heros I have ever had the privlage of hearing about, he is an inspiration and his love is constant.
