Book Review: Sample the Culinary Melting Pot of Miami

Loved it:

"A Minnesota gringo and two Miami Cubans, related by marriage, who bond through a shared love of Cuban culture and create a website to share their passion with the world.

With Colombian arepas and Nicaraguan tres leches in the mix, the title might more accurately be "Three Guys From Miami Cook Miami."

However, there are plenty of Cuban standards here, from picadillo and arroz con pollo to rice pudding and flan.

We even get the Elena Ruz, a turkey, cream cheese and strawberry-jam sandwich named for the customer who ordered it at a 1930s Havana restaurant."

The authors have updated the Cuban classics to reflect 50 years of Miami multicultural influence.

What you get are many traditional recipes and cooking methods re-imagined to take advantage of modern cooking styles and ingredients.

A few diehard Cubans might scoff at some of the non-traditional recipes, but there are plenty of strictly traditional Cuban cookbooks on the market. (For some Cuban cooks, the recipes for classic dishes were carved in stone by Nitza Villapol, the Cuban Betty Crocker. However, sticking to that Cuban food Bible would pretty much preclude anyone from ever writing another Cuban cookbook! Why repeat what has already been done before?)

This is a book for people who love good food, whether the recipes are strictly Cuban, or Spanish (gazpacho, paella, caldo gallego -- all enjoyed by Cubans!) or Latin American (arepas and empanadas, available at walk-up windows all over Miami) or even a few that are strictly Three Guys creations (Foccacia Cubana?)

This is a wonderful and refreshing look at a classic cuisine. I can't wait for their next book.

Book Review: Not a very "Cuban" Book
Summary: 2 Stars

My family (who is entirely CUBAN) sat around reading the recipes of this book and began to laugh. I mean, what REAL Cuban cooks a steak in Olive Oil??? We also DO NOT eat gazpacho...that is a Latin American dish...not Cuban...why is it in a Cuban Cook Book? I was not impressed with the book and am returning it in hopes that I find something more authentic and true.

Book Review: The Best

I have made about half of the recipes in this book and both my wife and I have enjoyed them immensely. We are both Cuban by the way, second generation, but let me tell you that the recipes are just like the one's my abuela used to make before she passed.

We especially like the recipes for paella, empanadas, frita Cubana, and the tamales can't be beat. We make frequent trips to Miami, and these dishes rival anything that we have had in any restaurant, large or small.

If you are new to Cuban food, I suggest you try the Three Guy's Arroz con Pollo. This one is even better than my mom's and she agrees!

I would like to see more photographs of the prepared dishes, but not at the expense of the many Miami photos.

The excellent photography lets me take a mini-vacation to Miami any time I cook with this book.

If you know and love real Cuban food, you will not be disappointed.

Book Review: I am not sure where the Cuban part is supposed to be
Summary: 2 Stars

I am having their Cuban hamburgers right now as I type this review. Their Cuban hamburgers are more accurately described as "extremely bland meatloaf on a bun." What a waste of ingredients and time.

Book Review: wonderful cookbook
Summary: 5 Stars

These recipies are authentic (according to my cuban wife) and not so complex that they are discouraging. A great choice for a single cuban cookbook for your kitchen.
