Book Reviews of Three Guys from Miami Cook CubanBook Review: Colombian with a Cuban taste Summary: 5 StarsI am a Colombian woman with a Cuban boyfriend. I really like Three Guys From Miami Cook Cuban because I can now cook all of the foods that my boyfriend loves. He says that these recipes taste just like the ones his mom and grandmother make at home! The comments are very entertaining -- what humor, what a culture!
Book Review: The Hardest Working Guys in Cuban Food! Summary: 5 StarsYou don't have to be Cuban to like this book. These are three guys who have worked really hard to promote Cuban food and culture. The recipes are very authentic and based on the dishes they learned from their families in Cuba. They have also received many, many recipes over the years from the Cuban community in Miami. What they have done is bring many of these old recipes from Cuba up to date with their own twists and variations. Their paella is the BEST I have ever had, and like everything in the book, they have made preparing it so simple with very easy to follow instructions.
I have personally prepared about half of the recipes in this book and everything has been a hit with my VERY CUBAN and VERY PICKY family! We especially love their recipe for tamales. Believe me, it is better than any tamal you can buy ANYWHERE in Miami. I also recommend the empanadas, a dish I rarely had in Cuba, but one that is sold all over Miami.
The camarones y arroz amarillo -- shrimp with yellow rice makes a great party dish as does the pollo asado ajillo -- a garlic roasted chicken that is so tender and flavorful you'll want to eat every scrap of chicken on your plate. I have made arroz con pollo -- chicken with rice -- for my family for years and I was always complemented on my dish, which I made with wine. I decided to try the Three Guys From Miami version, which uses beer, not wine. My family and I could not believe how delicious their recipe is! It's now the only one I make for family and friends.
If you want to put this book to the test, try the arroz con pollo, the caldo Gallego (bean soup), the carne guisado (beef stew), the huevos habaneros (Havana eggs), and the arroz imperial (imperial rice). If you don't like these dishes, you either don't know or don't like Cuban food!
The Three Guys From Miami recently did a three-hour, live cooking show on Miami Public Television for the most critical and demanding audience you can imagine -- the Miami Cubans. The response to this show was overwhelmingly positive and they have EARNED the respect of the Cuban community. We do love the Three Guys From Miami!
You can use the "search inside this book" feature on Amazon to see exactly what you're getting. Try a few recipes before you buy! If you are looking for authentic Cuban food with the taste of Miami, you will not be disappointed.
Book Review: shortfall Summary: 2 StarsNot worth the money. I do not care about how the boys look. I wanted the native receipes for Cuba. I wanted some authenticity from Cuba or at least the true Miami environment.
Book Review: Worst cookbook I've bought Summary: 1 StarsThis book is a total let down. There are multiple mispelled and/or misprinted words. The recipes are perhaps for a non-Cuban person that is learning the basics of cooking. The illustrations focus on the "three guys" not the recipes. I am totally disappointed. I wouldn't even purchase this book for $5, much less for $20. Complete rip-off.
Book Review: The best Cuban cookbook in my collection...... Summary: 5 Stars
Beautiful book containing 100 recipes that have been tested and
perfected through the years by these three brothers-in-law who also happen to be great friends. easy on the eye, with well written and clean looking pages most containing beautiful color photographs of the food, the authors and Miami. In a congenial and chatty way, these three friends discuss each recipe in the book using short and sometimes funny "sound-bites".
All the traditional Cuban recipes are included, some with an updated twist. They have also included recipes for other Latino food that has been quickly assimilated into the Cuban recipe repertoire such as the very rich and sinfully wonderful Nicaraguan Tres Leches Cake and the Colombian Arepas, a cornmeal and cheese delicacy that has become quite a popular snack to munch on during the many Miami street festivals.
