This is a great baseball book and I have never liked Tony LaRussa. But now, after reading this book, I can appreciate the intensity that he approaches baseball with and yes, I also have a respect for him that I didn't have before. He and Dave Duncan are baseball guys through and through.
While the book is mostly about the three games between the Cardinals and Cubs at a crucial point in the 2003 season, Tony and Buzz Bizzinger do not get caught up in describing every pitch and play of the game but instead offer colorful stories about the Cardinal and Cub baseball players such as Rick Ankiel, Jason Isringhausen, Steve Kline and Mark Prior. These stories gave me glimpses of the players that even as a baseball fan, I didn't know. As a Red Sox and a Giants fan, it was also interesting to see some of the players that later played for the Sox and the Giants early in their baseball careers.
It was also great fun to see games through the eyes of a manager - I will think twice before yelling at the TV set when I think I can manage better then Francona or Bochy!
