Book Reviews of Through My Eyes: Ruby Bridges

Book Review: Moving and full of information
Summary: 5 Stars

I really loved this book, it has a lot of pics and information about the time everything happened. This girl is such an example for everyone...

Book Review: Poignant, inspirational and edifying.
Summary: 5 Stars

A wonderful way to introduce younger children to and inform older children about an important part of the civil rights movement. It is especially nice to be able to share a story in which the hero is 7 years old.

Book Review: Poingnant story of a child's iinnocence
Summary: 5 Stars

This was a beautifully written and emotional story of a young child's innocence and bravery though a very turbulent time in our history. This young girl viewed everything going on around her with child-like wonderment and curiosity. I think that it says a lot about how adults might do well to adopt the temperment of a child. A wonderful book to share with your children or students!

Book Review: Read it for the discussion it provokes
Summary: 4 Stars

I began reading this book out loud to my 10-year-old because I recognized it as a book that he would not pick up on his own. It was the perfect thing to do because there were all sorts of terms like "segregation" and "racism" that he needed me to explain. But more importantly, he had all sorts of comments and questions about the ignorance and hatred depicted in this true that were worthy of discussion . . . some of which were predictable, some were not. He ended up finishing the book on his own because it is such an engaging story.

Book Review: Remember the Children
Summary: 4 Stars

This book is fantastic and I bought it for my students. The problem is she uses the N word so much. I had to comb through the book and ink out the word. I do not want children using that word to each other, and yes my students ARE BLACK, and especially don't want my white student learning he can say the word too. Then again it seems very immature that 1 can use the N word and the other cannot. It's a word that nobody should be using. Bridges could've just said "the whites shouted angry slurs" kids, of all colors, will pick up on what those words are through inappropriate means. Otherwise, I would still recommend to buy this book at is a wonderful book and has plenty of history and information.
