Book Review: Detailed, informative, yet some arguments are circular

The concept of building a counterterrorism training regimen at my old firm Terrorism Research Center (TRC) was inspired by the perspectives offered here by Scheuer. In fact, the author is still frequently tapped for a lecture or two during the 6-day course entitled "Mirror Image Training" for law enforcement, military, intel, and other security personnel.
The volume carefully traces bin Laden's emergence as the single most important leader of a global insurgency challenging the West's actions against and occupation of critical historical Muslim lands.
Chock full of annotations, the volume is obviously well-researched and presents a coherent (and possibly accurate) narrative of the views held by an increasingly globalized militant Islam. However, as the reader delves deeper into the volume, the author ratchets up the volume of his critique of American-led Western actions and is quite shrill by the final pages which detracts from his earlier sober-headed analysis.
Scheuer never quite escapes the (perhaps intentionally) conundrum facing US and western policy-makers: If we reverse course and abandon 50+ years of relations with existing (autocratic) middle eastern governments and Israel, aren't we encouraging increased militancy? By the end of the volume it is unclear whether he recommends that the US follow the demands of bin Laden and like-minded militants (leave Saudi Arabia and other holy sites, stop supporting Israel and persecuting the Palestinians, stop supporting corroupt ME regimes, pay greater prices for oil and other resources at Islam's disposal) or gear the public up for a massive, bloody, prolonged war against Islam in as part of Huntington's Clash with which Scheuer obviously holds in high regard.
It would be hard to ignore this book and remain well read in the field.
