Book Reviews of Thunderhead

Book Review: Come on.. It's not 5 stars. It's 4 at best.
Summary: 4 Stars

I am a big fan of Child/Preston team and this one doesn't measure up to the other books they wrote. This book has nice chases and some educational historical backgrounds but superhuman strength? It was easier to accept Relic's monster than the monsters from this one.

It's worth the paperback $, not hardcover $.

Book Review: Crazy fun
Summary: 4 Stars

THUNDERHEAD is a great summer read, just don't read it on a camping trip. The disaster-plagued expedition goes through some disturbing stuff, and the gore factor is pretty high. Still, the plot, if a bit far-fetched(what Preston-Child book isn't?), is action-packed, the research into Native American culture is impressive, and the characters are enjoyable. I personally was pleasantly surprised at the return of Bill Smithback, the obnoxious but endearing journalist from RELIC and RELIQUARY. Say what you want about his lack of investigative principles, but Smithback is one of the funniest characters in all of Preston and Child's books, and clearly a favorite of the authors. All in all, I'd recommend this book to anyone who loves being creeped out.

Book Review: Creepy!
Summary: 5 Stars

The Preston-Child duo has created the magic again, this time in the breathtaking mountains of Utah and with a horrifying theory regarding the mysterious collapse of the Anasazi civilization as the framework. They have also put in a lot other elements, all conducive for development of the charged atmosphere necessary for such a high-voltage work. Go ahead and enjoy it.

Book Review: DON'T MISS THIS READ!!!!
Summary: 5 Stars

Finally, a book that grabs your attention and holds it til the end. An excellent tale of mystery and intrigue. I have never read a Childs/Preston book I haven't liked, and I think I've read them all. Of all of them, this is my favorite.

Archeology, ancient mysteries, present mysteries, strange creatures, meddling bosses, unexpected happenings, great characters and a good story line keep you glued to the pages of this novel. When you're done with it, order their other works. They are worth having on your book shelves. You'll be telling all of your friends.

Book Review: Definitely a page turner
Summary: 4 Stars

This was my first Preston Childs book, but definitely not my last. I simply couldn't put it down until it was finished, and that doesn't happen much anymore, believe me.

The descriptions of the Anasazi dwellings and speculations on their culture, along with the desert environment and it's perils, kept me hooked. The characterizations were less believable and formulaic - the pompous scientist, the "salt of the earth" cowboy, the arrogant journalist, the plucky heroine - but this was all forgivable, given the power of the narrative. You were could feel the dust of the desert and terrified making your way with them through that slot canyon. I was riveted as they approached the lost city of Quivera, and when it was finally revealed - it was spellbinding.

From time to time the unlikely scenario of throwing together such a disparate crew, some of which were totally unprepared, on such an important archaeological expedition was irksome. Still, even that was acceptable, given the power of the storytelling What made me more uncomfortable however, was the gruesome deaths of all of the expedition's horses, along with Nora Kelly's indifference to the disappearance of her dog, later found mutilated. Throughout the book, this detail made me like her less.

That said, I highly recommend the book for it's archaeological detail and the sheer power of the story telling. It's a thriller in the true sense of the word.
