"It looked like a town that time forgot." "...a walking time bomb." Oh, goody, I thought, any moment I would come across my first "It was a dark and stormy night." Well, I guess I'll have to be satisfied with "The forrest ... felt dark and foreboding." Pretty close. After finishing this nightmare, I opened the book at random and found ON JUST ONE PAGE(!): "Mia's head snapped up ... Mia hurried to the bookcase ... Mia returned to the bookshelf ... Mia untied the string .. which Mia knew ... Mia wiped her palms ... Mia held her breath." And the grammar, puh-leeze. "She didn't desire jewelry LIKE so many of her friends DID." (emphasis added) "Up here there was only her." And on and on. Even horrific writing can partially be compensated by a decent plot -- but don't look for it here.
