Book Reviews of Timeline

Book Review: A Tasty Thriller!
Summary: 5 Stars

Definitely chricton's best work since "Jurassic Park", "Timeline" is amazingly imagined and plotted. The characters are superbly crafted and believable.

Crichton goes out of his way to immerse you in the world of 12th century, medieval France, it's politics and warring factions. Even more incredible is the way he describes the sights, smells and sounds of a world that none has ever known.

From the devastating power of a trebuchet to the relative quiet of the french countryside void of the ambient noise of modern life, Crichton tells a rich and compelling story that unfolds in front of you. His signature of blending science (in this case, quantum physics) and imagination is better than ever.

"Timeline" is a definite page turner and it's rich plot and ensemble cast makes for an entertaining read overall.

Book Review: A Timely Review
Summary: 5 Stars

I think Michael Chichtons's Timeline is an excellent book and the way he mixes scientific theories with great plots, suspense and action makes it one of the best novels ever written. The story starts in the arid Arizona deserts when a vacationing couple come across an old man at the side of the road. There are no cars or houses for miles around. How did he get there? Then the leader of a digging expedition disappears and his collegues receive an urgent letter asking for help written by him, but its hundreds of years old. I definitely recommend this book to all.

Book Review: A Travel Through Time
Summary: 5 Stars

Imagine that one could actually travel back into time, or at least to another universe. Where would one decide to go? Fourteenth century feudal France sounds quite intriguing.

In his new book, author, Michael Crichton takes the reader again on a breathtaking journey with unimaginable risks. Similar to Jurassic Park and his other books, Michael Crichton once again focus on the cutting edge of technology.

However, much like Jurassic Park and The Lost World a rich man uses the most advance ideas in science and technology to do the impossible. As Always things go wrong and everything seems never to be the same as it was before. Despite being similar to Jurassic Park, it was obvious that Michael Crichton's Timeline takes the reader on a path never travel before with outstanding details and descriptions of fourteenth century feudal France.

This book was definitely a non-stop page-turner! Definitely a must read book!

Book Review: A Waste of Paper!
Summary: 1 Stars

Michael Crichton is an accomplished writer who has produced some marvelous novels and one or two classics, 'Timeline' cannot be included amongst them. The notion of time travel has interested writers for over a hundred years, but I am more convinced by the possibilities of H.G. Wells' ivory and quartz chariot than Crichton's techno-nonsense. The book runs to almost five hundred pages, at least half of which are padding, full of endless chases and characters about as convincing as the cast of a Monty Python film. Much has been said here about the historical accuracy of the book, but in the hands of a skilled wordsmith such details, gathered from the internet in about thirty minutes, can be spun easily into a convincing scenario. In spite of his undoubted skill, Crichton makes a huge historical error. 'Lord Oliver' is described as being 'about thirty' and claims to have been present at the murder of King Edward 11. Well, as this story is set in 1357 and King Edward was murdered in 1327, was he a babe in arms or possibly a foetus at the time? This is not writing, but knitting!! Stick to dinosaurs and aliens, Mr. Crichton, and study English history a little more closely! One star awarded for effort!!

Book Review: A Waste of Time
Summary: 2 Stars

Now a major motion picture, as they say, Timeline is about time travel, archaeology and the Hundred Years War. It is also about an evil corporation (again!) trying to profit from off-the-wall science a la Jurassic Park. Being interested in the Middle Ages, I decided to suspend disbelief about the time travel gimmick and see what happened: I put myself in the author's hands. Sure enough, the first chapters involving the archaeology dig in France and the strange accidents and the first time travel scenes were pretty fun. But then the novel went downhill. Having arrived in 1357, I soon wanted to go back to the present and read Barbara Tuchman's A Distant Mirror instead of Michael Crichton's cartoonish world peopled with cardboard stereotypes. Mr Crichton doesn't really have the bent for an historical novelist but he tries to be one for much of the book. If you like medieval history you may find this book only worth checking out of the library; the many historical references in the back of Timeline will send you in the right direction. Otherwise, don't waste your time on this disappointing novel. Two time capsules out of five.
