Book Reviews of Titan (Gaea)Book Review: Best book ever Summary: 5 Stars
The only thing whrong with this book is that I read it 15 years ago, and now I compare everything i read to the enjoyment I got out of that book, and nothing lives up to that standard.
Book Review: Better than expected..... Summary: 4 Stars
This book was better than i thought it would be, but didnt leave me wanting to continue at all. I read it shortly after A.C. Clarks first Rama novel, so it was wierd that this book started out so close to that one. But it has enough differences that you will stop thinking about rama once the story gets underway.
Some people mention that there is sexuality involved and explorations into hetero and homo sexuality, and they are right, it does, but if that turns you off, like it did for me, dont worry there is enought here to enjoy if you are not a fan of the explorations of characters in Sci Fi. (I read sci fi for the science and for the mystery, not for the space opera aspects)
What there is to enjoy is the mystery of it all. You will be page turning to see what they saw over the next hill, or find out why a certain character has physically changed and you will enjoy that till the end when all is revealed.
There is Space Opera stuff, but not nearly enough to ruin it for people who dont enjoy that.
the porblem is that once finished, there was no real mysteries left. Im sure the sequels will introduce new things to draw you in, but once you finish this, you will understand how that initial discovery and exploration aspect of the book is lost, and any further reading looks to promise alot more drama than science.
Book Review: Came back to a classic Summary: 5 Stars
I first read Titan in 1979 and waited a year or so for Wizard. After Wizard was another year, and by the time Demon came out, I had forgotten the first two, figuring I'd go back and reread them someday. 20 years (and many books) later, I picked up the first two and rediscovered the magic and genius of this series, but now Demon is out of print!! Buy these books, read them, and demand a new edition of Demon! I'm still waiting to find out whatever happened to Cirocco Jones!
Book Review: Can I be an Titantide when I die? Summary: 5 Stars
John Varley's world is a world of wonder. A living being as a planet with a host of fabulous indigenous species called Gaea is slowly dying and taking on this God is Scirroco Jones and her crew from Earth.
I first read this series when it came out in 1978 and recently got the entire series on Audiobook. I remembered liking it very much the first time and the years have not diminished my enjoyment of the story and the fantastic setting. Varley's procreation scheme for the dominate Centaur like Titantides is ingenious and their communication by song and family grouping by chord is fascinating. Massive blimplike creatures serve as air transportation - in their stomachs and there is a race of Angels who are just like angels.
It's a world of non-humans dreamed up and manufactured by the God like Gaea who was inspired by the movies she viewed from Earth.
The characters are mostly likable even after enduring rebirth in the Titan and the world is filled with dangers like a resident King Kong and flying buzzbombs.
If it existed I would go.
Book Review: Damn good Summary: 5 Stars
I found this book on an old second hand books stall, and I have to say it's brilliant! Ever since I read it I have been searching for the others in the trilogy (without success). Then I thought of Amazon.com - oh joy! Sorry to contradict some of the other reviewers, but Titan is not unbelievable. It is because it is strange and so out of the ordinary that is is believable and compelling. I would recommmend it to any sci-fi freak (like me!).
