Book Reviews of TitanicBook Review: Navigate around the typos for a treat Summary: 5 Stars
As the 100th anniversary of the Titanic's sinking approaches in 2012, this is the place to begin your understanding of what happened on that awful night. Marriott has assembled most of the key elements in his narrative, made more compelling by the numerous photos of Titanic, and artwork of the ship. One can only hope that an updated edition of the book will be released shortly, adding all the post-Titanic movie clamor, giving more credit to author Walter Lord, and surveying in better fashion the many Titanic movies. There also needs to be some more discussion of the quality of Titanic's construction, and the steel used in the ship, and he could do a bit on Nomadic, the tender used by Titanic in Cherbourg, which now is tied up in Belfast. He throws out interesting tidbits -- Titanic was not full when it made its maiden voyage, an unusual event; the crew was thrown together at the last minute; and numerous other ships were near the site of the sinking beyond the Californian. He, unlike others, is a beliver that Titanic's band DID play "Nearer My God to Thee" in the final minutes. A tantalizing question posed by him: Did a nearby Norwegian sailing ship ignore the Titanic's in-distress fireworks because it was involved in illegal sealing? The author, and readers, are done a disservice by the many typos littering this work, which nevertheless still needs to be on any Titanic buff's shelf.
Book Review: One of the best, well researched, written, and illustrated Summary: 5 Stars
This is an excellent and very readable narrative with an abundance of good photographs and illustrations. Contains a lot of facts and arguments I have not found in other books. Only spoilt by numerous typos. One of my favorite accounts of the disaster.
