Book Review: Sklenar's honourable excursion into hell

If you have an interest in the Battle of the Little Big Horn, Larry Sklenar's 'To Hell With Honor' will definitely repay attention, even though it does not read as the most scholarly book on the subject.Sklenar writes in a deliberately rumbustious style as he hates the 'anoraky' approach of many recent writers with their meticulous time-motion studies and artefact-placement diagrams.
Unfortunately the point he wants to make is itself quite a technical one, and the writing does not best serve his purpose. There is also a lot of extraneous (and not very good) relating of the background to the battle and description of the characters involved, which adds to the general lack of clarity of his argument.
This is a shame because the point he is wishing to make is insightful, is based on sound historical methodology, and provides an exciting challenge to current thinking about the battle (interpreting the Lone Tepee episode as pivotal to the whole action).
In short, the enterprise is certainly not without honour, and will no doubt fuel further discussion. Recommended.
