Always on the lookout for interesting and descriptive narratives of combat, I picked up Mr. Shaara's "To the Last Man" right here in his hometown of Missoula, MT. I had read in the local paper that he was to give a lecture of the book on the occaision of its release. As I am new to Missoula, I was further intigued by the monument outside of our County Courthouse of a doughboy..so with my curiousity piqued, I bought the book. (note: there is brief mention of a Marine recruit from Missoula)
I must say I enjoyed the book, but was disappointed by what I perceived as the the lack of prosaic artistry found in his father's "Killer Angels". It must be a hard thing for a son to follow in a famous father's footsteps, but many of the same devices of character development his father used in KA are used here to weave the historical narrative, though not so deftly or with any real depth. I found the text to be simplistic and not particularly challenging in a way that entices one want to chew over paragraphs a second and third time.
The Billy Mitchell error notwithstanding, I found the narrative to be accurate as far as I know WWI history. I just hoped for a book richer in language and development. Regardless, I found the book useful for filling in a few blanks, and would recommend it it to someone mostly unfamiliar with "the war to end all wars". For the true afficianado, there are other books more worthwhile.
