Book Reviews of Tom Cruise: An Unauthorized Biography

Book Review: Confirms our Suspicions
Summary: 3 Stars

Tom Cruise, ho hum.....Andrew Morton has down his research well and deserves any accolades heading his way, especially considering how boring his subject turned out to be. I was a fan of Tom Cruise for many years but as time passed, his off stage antics and comments have pushed me away from his movies, sad really considering he has a reasonable acting talent, and has landed some great movies. But I will certainly not be holding my breath to see what he has up his sleeve for the future......Like who cares anymore?

Book Review: Tom Cruise according to Andrew Morton
Summary: 2 Stars

An interesting book after all the hype plus the fact that is is banned from publication in Australia. Interesting in that there is a little bit about everything: Tom, his family, his wives, his conversion or immersion into Scientology and what this means for the future of Scientology (and the world!!??) Certainly Andrew Morton has made Tom Cruise out to be one of the bad guys and it's really hard to tell what is good or bad, true or false, believable or unbelievable - but this is probably what made the book interesting. Not a serious read at all but I must admit I did get through it and went scampering to find out more about Scientology.

Book Review: warning about shipping
Summary: 4 Stars

Beware of "free shipping" take it to mean super slow delivery. I ordered this book for a book club meeting. It was in stock. Ordered 2/5. My order was not even filled until 2/11 and I did not rec. until 2/19. Free shipping is no longer worth using. I might as well go to brick and mortar store and buy the book. No cost savings and shipping is no longer convenient. Amazon holds your items hostage for a week before shipping. On another note book was very interesting and provided some additional information to the gossip we have all heard over the years.

Book Review: Tom Cruise: Portrait of a Boring Man except for the entire Scientology story
Summary: 3 Stars

I picked this up from a public library based on reading some snippets it, including the Scientology stuff. It's just as much about how Scientology made itself respectable as it is about Tom Cruise. If Morton is correct, those two stories tie in together perfectly.

The book is slow during the non Scientology parts, especially in the beginning chapters. We get that Tom Cruise is a driven, super professional actor. The most informative parts were about his personal relationships, especially with the women in his life. Some of the information, including auditioning leads for MI:3 and simultaneously looking for a new spouse/girlfriend were not new - that had come out in 2005/6.

The Scientology stuff is the heart of the book. It's what kept me interested. Some of the information I knew because of the South Park episode. Reading about it was scary, especially their master plan.

One thing that I noticed - there are no footnotes in the book linking a particular source to the incident or quote. They are standard in biography and nonfiction. I wonder why Morton did not use them. Perhaps he omitted them to protect his sources from legal action by Tom Cruise and the Church of Scientology.

Book Review: About the only thing true...
Summary: 1 Stars

About the only thing true in this book is that Andrew Morton is the author. Morton uses the "unauthorized" title as a vehicle to express his depraved imagination. None of the "facts" he claims in this book are true and are actually documented lies, so long disproven in court cases, it's not a point of negligence. Furthermore, the "sources" he referenced in the book were similarly denounced in courts as discreditable. This book is an example of tabloid journalism at its worst. The reason it was denied printing by British publishers is because Morton was unable to prove the statements made which is required under UK law. Leave it to an American publisher, St. Martin's Press, to publish sensationalism and neglect its responsibility for verifying the material before publishing it as non-fiction. Imagine what college professors would think if a publisher took any of the many "proofs" submitted to journals daily claiming they've disproven Einstein's Theory of Relativity and published it as a textbook just because those authors said they did it. Well, that's exactly what St. Martin's press did. Believe it if you like, it simply reflects where you have to scrape to find your IQ, and where this book belongs.
