Book Reviews of Tony Soprano on Management: Leadership Lessons Inspired by America's Favorite Mobster

Book Review: It's All About People
Summary: 5 Stars

I was skeptical about this book. But now I love it. I really like the idea that it's all about people, and I think managers would be wise to listen to that.

Tony knows that relationships are the building blocks of good teams. He also respects those he works with. And you'd better believe that he demands their respect. And that's cool too. Leaders should do that. And he gives people responsibility, let's them do things their way. Micromanaging drives me (and others) nuts. Schneider calls these the 3 R's. I've photocopied that page and it's taped above my desk.

Book Review: Lucid for Leaders, Valuable for All
Summary: 5 Stars

This is a well researched, well written book. It takes a leader we know and love despite his shortcomings and failures and shows how his leadership style is truly effective and radically different from most leaders in the business world.

Among other things, the book talks about vision and values, meetings, delegating and how to be more efficient and decisive.

The book will be of most interest to business leaders, but it's also useful for leaders in other types of organizations. It's also useful for people who are not leaders themselves but need to learn how to "manage up" or influence a boss or client, whcih is a valuable skill.

If you like leadership books, or are a Sopranos fan, you will probably love this book. Because it's well written, you will keep reading. Because its lessons are valuable, it will help you in your business or organization.

Book Review: Laughter Helps the Medicine Go Down Easy
Summary: 5 Stars

The first thing I have to say is that expertise in managing people or processes comes primarily from experience. Anybody who expects to get a complete education in management from a book should not be a manager.

That said, I loved this book because it doesn't take management as seriously as other books out there do. Sure, there are serious lessons here, but they come in a funny package. Almost every other management book I've read takes itself way too seriously, treating management like it's brain surgery, and depicting whatever "system" it advances as the Holy Grail of management. This book gives you good tips, and makes you laugh in the process. Totally worth reading.

Book Review: This Book is a Winner
Summary: 5 Stars

This goes out to Mr. Russo, who appears to be the friend of the author of a similar book. You weren't robbed. Open your eyes and read the book. Schneider's leadership guide is unorthodox and timely. From vision and strategy, to implementation and meetings, this book is a powerful roadmap for managers.

There are great insights in this book, and I should know. I manage more people than you do. Quit your whining, stop trying to promote your friend's book at the expense of someone else's and get a job.

Book Review: I Was Robbed!!
Summary: 1 Stars

I thought this book would offer me something new---along with insights gained from one of my favorite characters. I was robbed! The suthor IS slick--and summarizes some great 'Tonyisms', but what he knows about business and management wouldn't fill a gnat's eye. His applications are forced, trite and very old. Nothing new here. Guess it takes a real manager to write a real book about it. All those reviewers who told how it saved their businesses must be in a business world other than mine! What a rip off!
