Book Review: Faye discovers some nasty truths in Too Darn Hot

Faye Quick's second case is a doozy in Too Darn Hot; while searching for a client's enlisted boyfriend, she stumbles across a male body in the missing boyfriend's hotel room. Things quickly grow complicated when it turns out that the body might not be that of Pvt Charlie Ladd, but another soldier.
The more Faye digs into the case, the more warnings she receives to stay away, some delivered by Uncle Sam himself. Unlike Faye's first case in This Dame for Hire: A Novel, the plot is directly related to the ongoing war, and contains hefty doses of anti-Semitism directed at several Jewish secondary characters. One of the most heartbreaking recurring themes was that of the newsshop owner Nick Jaffe, who tries to tell Faye about the gassing of innocents at Nazi concentration camps, but Faye brushes him off as looney. However, Faye's eyes are gradually opened to the blatant anti-Semitism right there in New York as the novel unfolds.
This second installment, while chock full of the 1940s, was not as engaging as the first. There are fewer plot twists, and I felt the ending to be unsatisfying. Also, the anti-Semitic subtext bothered me, particularly with Faye's quick dismissal of concentration camps as "crazy." However, Faye is an engaging voice as a spunky female detective battling a man's world as she searches for leads. Faye's romance with Detective Johnny Lake also heats up, unlike the first novel This Dame for Hire, which was devoid of romance. This is still a fun read, just a bit less engaging than the first. You'll feel like you've stepped out into 1944 New York in this delightful series.
