Book Reviews of Tortilla Flat

Book Review: Hilarious, vintage Steinbeck
Summary: 5 Stars

I'm a big Steinbeck fan and this is one of my favorites. In a similar vein to Cannery Row, it is funny, beautifully written and shows a great love and understanding of people. Must read for Steinbeck fan or anyone who has a love for unpretentious, funny, inspiring writing filled with a love of humanity.

Book Review: I love Steinbeck
Summary: 5 Stars

I loved The Cannery Row and had the common feeling of joy and satisfaction after getting through a masterpiece as well as of regret that the book cannot be read again with the same satisfaction and interest. Thank goodness, there is Tortilla Flat. Very close to the sprit of the Cannery Row, it speaks about homeless guys who find a home (2 actually). Their life changes and now they are faced with the common world troubles: responsibilities, greed, and neighbours. The simple life of a homless was seems quiate attractive after you finish. Good read.

Great MBA book - good humor and story. Simplicity and simple people are always appreciated. There is more wisdom in common sense than in any finance book. Get this one.

Book Review: If this is about friendships, I don't want any!
Summary: 2 Stars

Steinbeck portrays a pathetic group of acquaintances. An addiction to booze is the motive -with few exceptions- for every kind action. Tortilla Flat is good for a taste of reality, but not one that fills you with conviction to be a better friend.

Book Review: Ignorance grows as the warning grows
Summary: 5 Stars

This book is not quite as beautifully written as "Of Mice and Men", but it has a very powerful and true message albeit it might be a little exaggerated in this particular story. It's a tale about the power of the dreams that drives us, taking us places where we didn't dream of going, and neither wanted to go. It's a story about taking one apparently harmless step that forces you to take another step, and yet another until you end up where you didn't expect, one little step that only the wise would avoid taking. It's also a story about day and night, what happens on the surface and what happens beneath.

The message becomes apparent early in the book, but it grows stronger and stronger as the main characters grow more and more ignorant towards it. While reaching the last pages my adrenalin was pumping, knowing that something was going to happen, but not knowing exactly what and I was somewhat surprised by the ending.

This is the second book I've read by Steinbeck and definitely not the last.

Book Review: Incredible
Summary: 5 Stars

Steinbecks' Tortilla flats is a thoroughly moving book, when I finished reading it, I re-read it and I still felt that I had to read it a third time, its an absolutely amazing book, Danny, Big Joe Portagee, the Pirate and his dogs, Pilon, Jesus Maria and Pablo are a heart warming bunch of paisanos, its a must read, whatever that is!
