Book Reviews of Toujours Provence

Book Review: Pas mal, mais....
Summary: 3 Stars

I knew we were in trouble when Mayle's sequel to his delightful "Year in Provence" opened with vignettes on constipation and suppositories. Oh, Mayle's fresh and breezy style is here, and he still has an eye for small but telling details, but this is mainly a retread of the same ground he worked in the much more cohesive "Year in Provence." We are told, yet again, about annoying guests, fraud in the truffle trade, and the arrogance of outsiders who are invading Provence and turning it into a playground for the rich, which is rich coming from a man who has plenty of money to finance his enviable lifestyle and quests to discover the origins of pastis!
All that said, Mayle has a talent for evoking place, and his descriptions of memorable meals will leave you salivating. But you can get all that, in better form, in A Year in Provence.

Book Review: Poetic gourmet tour of Provence
Summary: 5 Stars

Pete Mayle does it again. Experience Provence through the poetic, visual style of the expert. Who needs to travel when you have Peter at hand?

Book Review: Satisfying Intermediate to Advanced Reading.
Summary: 4 Stars

Toujour Provence is very much similar to A Year in Provence but with new random tales of life in Southern France. It's the same delightful read, just as the first, peppered with good-humor and open-minded observations, all thoroughly described with a level of upper intermediate to lower advance level of reading. There are books that deceives the reader with 300+ pages of wordage, only to find oneself disappointed in how unbelievably easy and grade-school the story is approached and written. Not so with Peter Mayle. Then there are books that drone on and on, over-descriptive, over-wordy, takes too long to get to the point. Not so with Peter Mayle. You will be satisfied with the manner and level of how this book is written.*

Book Review: The South of France at Your Fingertips
Summary: 5 Stars

I actually read Toujours Provence before the first of the series, A Year in Provence, and loved it! I hadn't ever thought of throwing it all in and moving to the South of France but after reading this book it seems like a wonderful idea. Mayle makes even the frustrations in Provence sound romantic and wonderful. This is a great book to read if you are in need of a vacation but just can't get around to it. You'll be dreaming of vines, Pastis, wonderful food, and the French. Eh oui. A great travel book!

Book Review: Toujours Provence
Summary: 5 Stars

Another "le home run" by Peter Mayle. He makes the reader feel that he or she is right by his side as he discovers new restaurants, goes to market, or takes part in a fantastic experience tasting wines in a local cave. After two of his books I feel like I know the locals and could feel right at home in his village. His books are difficult to put down. I found myself looking forward to "going to Provence" for a few chapters every evening. Thank you Peter.
