Book Reviews of TrainspottingBook Review: Excellent Summary: 5 Stars
As a reader currently accustomed to standard paperback
bestseller crap "Trainspotting" was a welcome change. I
admit, I didn''t discover this book in its obscurity but
was influenced to read it after the great media-hype
surrounding the film, but I still feel gratitude I read the
book before watching the movie. This book, unlike other
mind-numbing American novels later turned into films,
intrigues the reader and teases his thoughts and his
perception of border lines and what is acceptable and
unacceptable. The novel never urges the reader to try any
drug but rather shows the real side of drug use, the ups
and downs of mainly Heroine and alchohol, in a funny and
provokingly interesting way. With the use of intricate
scottish slang Welsh manages to expose the dark realities of
hopeless junkie lives and bring out the humor of those empty
lives, while still incorpporating hilarious sex scenes, harsh
violence and drug use. A definate must-read, this book will
hopefully open the minds of its readers, if there is any hope
in the youth of this great world of ours!
Book Review: Excellent!!! Summary: 5 Stars
While seeing previews of "Trainspotting" the movie I wondered what it was all about. I went out and purchased the book. Since I had seen the previews I had faces to put with the names in the book. As I started reading I realized that I couldn't put it down. I went through many emotions while reading this novel: sadness, joy, fear, and understanding. I recommend reading the book before seeing the film, but if you've already viewed it I highly recommend reading the book for a better understanding of the film. Altogether I've read the book, saw the movie, and I own the soundtrack. In a word WONDERFUL!
Book Review: Extra-ordinary Summary: 5 Stars
I had heard about the movie and decided to read the book first (only to find myself vastly disappointed with the cinema version). Irvine Welsh delves into the lives of these junkies and the pages seem to come alive. One finds himself disgusted, charmed and saddened by this lifestyle in Scotland. All in all I couldn't put the book down, reading it while on a bus tour through Europe. The vernacular style of the book was a bit difficult, at first, but once I got used to it I was off and running. I have read Welsh's other novels, as well, and found Ecstasy to be equal in entertainment quality.
Book Review: FAHKIN ACE, RENTS. Summary: 5 Stars
This book is perfect in every way. It blows the film away any day of the week and the film was really good. I'm glad I read the book first, it really did show the film up.The Scottish phonetics make the book work so well, adding some real feel of authenticity. The true grittiness and honesty of the book speak for themselves. Buy this book. Just don't lend it to grandma.
Book Review: Fan-bloody-tastic Summary: 5 Stars
A most incredible book, Trainspotting is something you'll either swear by or hate.... i'm among the former...although there's no real plot - just a mosaic of junkie experiences which develop character and involve the reader - the book is immersive from beginning to end... alright, initially the phonetic spelling is hard to understand... but eventually, once you get into it, you'll realise what a masterpiece this is. One of the top books of the 20th century.
