Book Review: A slightly unnecessary reworking of an OSC classic

As he has done several times before with other works, OSC has taken an early novel (in this case 1978's "A Planet Called Treason") and "re-imagined" it - and while the new version retains some of the power of the original, it is considerably less immediate and involving, partly because of the change of perspective from first to third person, and partly because he has injected more of the philosophising - and lecturing - of his later style, which interferes with the flow of the story.The story of Lanik Mueller, involved in a quest to regain his birthright, and encountering the many warring tribes who have diverged physically, psychologically and ethically from each other, is fascinating and well-observed.
There is, as so distressingly often in OSC's works, an anti-gay message in this novel. Only heterosexual humans can achieve any sort of happiness, and OSC's Mormon beliefs blind him to any other message. For such a talented, muscular, and often lyrical writer, this strikes a sour note in several of his otherwise outstanding works.
