Book Reviews of Treat Your Own BackBook Review: I'll be back... Summary: 5 Stars
TERRIFIC BOOK! I can't praise this book enough. I ruptured a disc in my lower back in Dec., 2006. I spent 9 months as a semi-cripple. I went thru a series of 3 cortisone injections into my spine. They helped, but not completely. You are only allowed to have 3 shots in a 1 year period, and mine started wearing off after 5 months. I was looking at back surgery, which was very, very scary. I was so depressed about it.
I found this book thru one of Amazon's wonderful links: I was actually looking for a back brace. I took advantage of their "Customers who bought this item also bought..." feature, and bought the 2 together. Well, I ended up never having to use the back brace! I swear, after 1 week of doing the exercises in this book, I was feeling so much better! Best $10 I ever spent.
Whenever my back starts acting up, I immediately go back to this book and start the exercises. The pain usually goes away in 2-3 days, sometimes sooner. I have only praise for this book. Thank you, thank you THANK YOU, Mr. McKenzie, for writing this!
Book Review: I'm 2 years post micro-discectomy, and it helped me Summary: 5 Stars
Had micro-discectomy surgery in 1/2006 for herniated disc (L5/S1). Had tried McKenzie stretching pre-surgery, but it didn't help. Surgery eliminated sciatica (thank g-d!) but had recurring numbness in the leg, especially after golf, stretching, jogging or yoga. So I limited these activities significantly.
Bought the book around 2/1/2008, did the prescribed stretching at least once a day (at 10:30 AM then post exercise) for about six weeks and the numbness is totally gone. I've resumed running 1-2 times per week, and did a complete yoga tape (Rodney Yee's excellent Yoga for Athletes) for the first time last night. No numbness this AM and I'm psyched.
Normal caveats apply. Everyone's back is different, don't do anything that causes pain. If you're post-surgery and experiencing periodic numbness, give this book a try. If you're having sciatica type pains pre-surgery (pains shooting down the leg) or numbness or weakness in your feet, give this a try.
Book Review: If I had bought this earlier, it could have saved me $$$ in physio Summary: 5 Stars
This book was a perfect solution to my personal back problem (your results may vary). After consulting two physiotherapists, I had received similar advice to what is contained in this book. HOWEVER neither physio had explained the exercises in the detailed way in which this book does. As a result of doing the exercises incorrectly, and taking too many OTC pain killers, I had made my back problem much worse.
Two weeks after I received this book, I was on my way to recovery, and I've been pain-free for weeks now. Thank you very much for this wonderful, easy to read guide.
Book Review: If your back hurts read this book Summary: 5 Stars
Several years ago I was having back pain that was quite disabling. I could not walk any distance without pain in my lower back and left leg. A friend recommended this book to me, and by doing the suggested exercises I was almost back to normal in two or three weeks. In a very concise way, the author explains the anatomy of the spine and nerves that cause most kinds of lower back pain. He then gives exercises to cure the problem. I have been recommending this book and giving it to friends ever since.
Book Review: It Works Summary: 5 Stars
After years of back problems, I've finally found the cure for them, and just a few simple stretching exercises is all it takes. Well-written book, clear and concise.
