Book Review: "Engrossing" Is An Understatement!
Summary: 5 Stars
One of my top 3 all-time favorite books. Truly could not put it down. Extremely well developed characters. Engrossing plot and sub-plots concerning the Irish Catholic struggles against those Protestants who wanted to rule over them. You will acquire strong emotions towards the characters, weep at the atrocities, and your hands won't be able to flip the pages fast enough.
Mr. Uris is notorious for thorough research and it clearly shows here. I thoroughly enjoyed the histroy lesson in and of itself and walked away with a much clearer understanding of what the Irish people went through.
I am truly confounded by reviews that find the book offensive, the characters non-pc, or think the author needs to express the differences between issues that existed back then versus current issues. This is a "historical fiction" book. The author is under no such obligation to fulfill your religious or pc desires. Being of this genre, all he has to do is paint a reasonable picture of the events and era, and that he does with brilliant success. Moreover, he does so in a way that will leave you wishing the book never ended.
