Book Review: Classic pre-WWII space opera

First serialized in 1934, Triplanetary is pre-WWII science fiction at its best. This first book in the Lensman series begins a tale which has been called the greatest space opera of all time. Written with an economy of words, this story is all action, and full of battles, strange entities and beautiful women - everything pulp fiction is known for. Humanity has reached the stars, but unbeknownst to them, the Solar System is about to become a battleground between two other space faring races, the good Arisians and the evil Eddorians.
At times the language of Triplanetary can be a bit dated. The science too, shows its age by making claims we now know cannot pan out based on our more advanced scientific understanding. Because the story was originally written as a serial, it can feel a tad disconnected from chapter to chapter. Yet at the time it was written, it was an exceptionally entertaining piece of fiction. And that entertainment value has never left. Triplanetary is great for SF classicists, literary scholars of the pre-WWII period, or fans of space opera to read. This particular edition also includes the tale Masters of Space.
