Book Reviews of True Evil: A Novel

Book Review: Just too lonnng
Summary: 3 Stars

Greg Iles has come up with a fantastic premise for True Evil, one that is scarier because it could readily be true. This is a gripping story that could have been better with two basic changes.
As other reviewers have noted, the book is simply too long. The 200 pages in its center are repetitive and interminable. The second problem lies with characterization. With the exception of Dr. Shepherd, all the major players are over-the-top and too good to be true - some too nice, others too caring, too stupid, effective, too perfect or greedy. Alex, our heroine, really isn't very likable....
Otherwise, Iles is also adept at presenting violence without overdoing the gore. The biologically induced murders are ingenious, Tarver himself a sort of mad genius with an imagination to match. This is a storyline that is usually treated within terrorism novels, but placing it in ordinary circumstances is original and creative. Worth reading just for its implications - you may not think it could never happen after reading this!

Book Review: LOVED this book!
Summary: 5 Stars

A friend of mine loaned me this book and I had never heard of Greg Iles before but, after reading it, I cannot wait to read more from him!

I read this entire book in a day and a half...it's over 600 pages... I couldnt put it down.

If you like suspense thrillers, I highly recommend this one. It's action packed from the get go and really grabs you so you cant put it down!

Great book!

Book Review: Medical Malpractice
Summary: 4 Stars

This novel is not kind to lawyers and doctors. This is a tale of a lawyer and a doctor that you really don't want to seek out for professional advice. The plot revolves around a medical discovery that can be used for evil. Now certainly that's a plot line that can hardly be described as fresh. I've certainly ploughed through a lot of books where sociopathic scientists have put in long hours trying to come up with a discovery that society will view with complete horror.

So we have a stale plot here. Should we skip this book and wait for the next novel by Grisham or even one by Child? No need. You simply read this book for the thrill of the chase. These bad guys have used medical means to kill the spouses of the attorney's unhappy clients. Our hero here is Alex "Scarface"(she took a shotgun blast in the face) Morse a rogue FBI agent who is a pretty tough lady. Forget the preposterous medical discovery and its bizarre utilization in a legal practice, and go along for the exciting ride as Alex scampers after them without even stopping long enough to sleep.

Admittedly toward the end things get a bit silly so you can chuckle while you lap up the thrills. And, of course, to make all the plot antics work the author can't avoid some flaws, but that's being picky. I would usually rate a novel without either any literary pretensions or a fresh plot at two stars, but this one was so much fun that I gave it four stars.

Book Review: Mississippi's Best Writer
Summary: 5 Stars

Iles is a consummate plotter. This book roars along like NASCAR at Talladega--with inexorable momentum, at a scary pace, and with disaster guaranteed. It's un-put-down-able.

Faulkner would be proud of Iles and Grisham. Grisham is one of our most entertaining writers, and this third Mississippian is even stronger--master of a wider range of genres. His women, some of them the narrators of their stories, are authentically fleshed-out. He draws on a more polymathic store of knowledge to foster verisimitude. (And he achieves it without such fancy words!)

You'll learn a lot inside the skins of these memorable characters. But Iles is, above all, a riveting yarn-spinner. I'm surprised his writing didn't catch fire from the git-go the way Grisham's did. In my opinion, this Grisham crony is getting better faster and shows a deeper grasp of what life is about.

Ain't it great that we have both of these Mississippi boys?

Book Review: My first G.I. But not last, WOW
Summary: 5 Stars

What a wild idea and novel, I loved it. I hope these things can't be true. But as a novel it kept me thinking and turning pages!
I would like to see more of this main Character FBI agent in future she was relentless and wonderful.I am looking for many more of his thrillers and hope they will be equally impressive. Rob
