Book Review: Bushranger speaks from beyond the grave.
Summary: 5 Stars
A sympathetic, gently human story roughly based on the short of Ned Kelly the Victorian (as in Victoria, now a state in Australia) bushranger. Carey writes using the language that Kelly may have used, slowly painting a picture not only of the beauty of Australia, but also the barbarity, resourcefulness and stupidity of the early transportees and settlers. Kelly comes across as an absurd self pitying victim, but also an immensely likeable, brave and honourable character. Likewise,Carey also weaves a magical and amusing lyricism in and around the tale, a sometime echo of the great Flann O'Brien.
