Book Review: "Thin, pretty, big t**s, your basic nightmare" (Carrie Fisher)

That pretty much sums up Rachel Gibson's latest heroine, Faith Duffy. The freshly widowed former stripper/centerfold is young, drop-dead beautiful and, thanks to her late husband, outrageously rich and the owner of a pro hockey team. Ty Savage, the team's newly aquired Captain is straight from romance novel central casting: Tall, dark, handsome and sexy. They meet, sparks fly and...well, you know the rest.
I didn't mind that the plot to this story was less than original but I had expected Rachel to put her own unique spin on it. Instead what I got was a likable (if shallow) female lead who I couldn't feel any empathy for or connection to. It's a foregone conclusion that Ty will be attracted to Faith - Sports stars and centerfolds go together like peanut butter and jelly. Where was the tension between these two? Are we supposed to believe that becoming involved with Faith will somehow endanger Ty's career? If by some stretch of the imagination their affair so much as raised an eyebrow - so what? When was the last time a minor sex scandal involving two single people sidelined a professional athlete's career? With no one to "root" for I just couldn't maintain an interest in this book.
Bottom Line: Rachel Gibson is a fine author and this book does contain witty dialogue, humor and sexy love scenes. Since I could not connect to the main characters it was a less than satisfying read for me but may be the pefect escape for someone else.
