Book Reviews of Trunk Music (Harry Bosch, No. 5)Book Review: Almost good Summary: 3 Stars
Michael Connelly is an extremely popular writer. I am a passionate British mystery fan,and rarely venture out of that bracket. "Trunk Music" is randomly, the first book by Mr. Connelly that I've read. And I wasn't exilarated by it. It is a very long, and more than a bit contrived novel. The leading character Harry Bosch is not very original or well drawn. He doesn't stand out among oodles od simmilar detectives.
The writing is strong and plot somehow picks up, but there is nothing remarkable about it.
I prefer darker musings of Denise Mina and Stuart McBride, for example, than this average and uninspired craft.
Book Review: BOY, does he return with a bang! Summary: 5 Stars
Before Trunk Music, there are four novels by Michael Connelly that feature Harry Bosch, a hard-boiled Hollywood detective. In the fifth novel, The Poet, Bosch is completely absent and is replaced by a Colorado news reporter named Jack McEvoy. While, it isn't really in the same league as books 3 & 4 (The Concrete Blonde & The Last Coyote), it still is dark, disturbing, and enjoyable to read. Bosch returns in the sixth installment called Trunk Music, and it's just as great as books 3 & 4. I love how hard-hitting it is, and I love how believable the characters are (from Bosch to Eleanor Wish to even Joey Marks). There's plenty of action and suspense from beginning to end, with some fascinating police investigations here and there. The one problem I had with this book is the suspect's (or suspects') motive, which has been used many times before. Still, Trunk Music is an incredibly enjoyable crime thriller. As a fan of Connelly (and Bosch), I won't hesitate when I purchase the next book, Blood Work. Even if it doesn't feature Bosch, I'll still purchase it.

Book Review: Better than average Connelly Summary: 5 Stars
Connelly always tells a great story that keeps you guessing and this is one of his better ones.
Book Review: Continuing the action with Harry Bosch Summary: 4 Stars
Harry Bosch draws the case when a body is found in the trunk of a Rolls-Royce. On the surface, it appears to be a mob hit by the Outfit. The case takes Harry to Vegas where he finds an old flame along with some leads (see "The Black Echo). As usual there are some twists and turns along with some surprises. And, of course, there is the question of all that money.
Book Review: Down Beat To The Music Summary: 4 Stars
Harry Bosch is a pitbull and as a LAPD Detective no one chews on a case better than Bosch. Like a pitbull too he has that teeth baring edge that keeps you saying 'nice doggie' while you quickly search around for a rolled up newspaper or say, a cannon.
Never mind the storyline because far too many us here give away plots and twists in reviews. In doing so it sometimes cheats both the writer who took months at the keyboard to create them and the readers taking away the discovery of the developments as they occur.Yeah, there are a few rough spots here and there but this is another good story...a dead body in the trunk of a Rolls and a murder with Vegas connections. Come on, for crying out loud! That should get us hooked!
What I like about Connelly's writing style is how he makes it seem so effortless; story flow, character development and most of all human flaws in the good and bad guys and gals.
TRUNK MUSIC is another piece of the puzzle that's Harry Bosch and just like jig-saw puzzles it's the overall picture that keeps us staying with it.
As a Vietnam vet I'm glad to see Harry still has something to add to the job- quirks, scars, blue moods, et al.
